Ideas for Chicago Metra and Amtrak Yard Roosevelt rd.
Posted by chipset35 on Monday, January 10, 2022 7:25 AM

My layout is almost done, but am looking on ideas how to make my Metra yard more interesting.

Its push pull operations like the real thing, 2 Metra engines, 6 Metra passenger cars, and one Amtrak engine and several cars.

Any suggestions?

In my opinion it will be difficult because your trains basically do the same thing. They run to Union Station inbound. Lay over in the yard.  Go back to Union Station and disperse. If you added an off railroad lead to the station it would add operation and timetable requirements to the trains

The Metra trains can leave the yard and enter hidden staging.

Would a Amtrak lead help that goes to a hidden loop?

I am familiar with how trains entered and departed Dearborn Station and LaSalle Street Station. But, I am not certain about entry and departure into Union Station. Do Metra and Amtrak trains pull into the station head first? If so, are passenger car consists pulled back to the yard at 12th Street?  Then what? Are seats reversible so that the consist is pushed back into the station and motive power then pulls the train out of the station?

I get your desire to make the yard more interesting, but I am not sure what you could do to make that so. What would be the reason to send passenger car consists through a hidden loop?

I am interested in your issues, but more information would help.

Metra trains come in cab car first, Amtrak for the most part is locomotive first.  I would suggest to the OP to watch this video.  Lots going on, not just trains arriving and departing.

Good video. I forgot that Metra pushes its trains into CUS with motive power at the rear, then pull out motive power first. Amtrak does it the traditional way with motive power always at the head end pulling the passenger car consist into and out of CUS.
