Don: <br /> <br />Atlas and Kato both use the same basic design as Athearn. They have refined the design further than Athearn has on the Blue Box units. But it's still the same basic flywheel-equipped motor to worm gear on a gear tower drive and a heavy frame(As opposed to the other designs, most notably the 'Power Truck' which work fine in larger scales but not in HO or smaller). The biggest advantage the Kato-style drive has is simply better quality production, with higher quality motors and better tolerances than the Blue Box units, not any real design difference. Of course, the heavier frames do help too.
