The only time I get that effect is when it's mixed too dry. Try adding a little more water. It's very happy to be used with very different amounts of moisture when mixed and you can also mist water on it when working it if it turns out too dry.
If you're used to being very careful about the amount of water going in, because that's pretty important to get right with plaster, relax and enjoy the fact that Sculptamold is happily oblivious to any need to be mixed precisely. Mix it to suit how you'll apply it.
