Rivarossi 4-8-4 Northern problem
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 30, 2004 2:11 PM
I just bought a Rivarossi 4-8-4 Northern #8444 that was made in the late 80's. The person I bought it from never had a layout and only bought it because the actual engine passed through his town in Colorado a couple of times. It was never run and kept in a display case. When I went to put it on my layout it did not work. I took it to a hobby shop and they said that the motor was fine, their was a direct short in the frame. They are reriviting my engine. Has anyone ever experienced this with their engine?

Thanks,

There are a lot of things that might cause a direct short, most of them not real serious. Why this would be cause for "re-riveting" I would not care to hazard a guess.
What could have happened.... did.

sounds like something went wrong in the manufacturing process and one of the rivets that keep the frame together wasn't insulated properly or one of the wires got nipped.

Rivarossi's had electrical-pickup poblems. Give them istructions to "make it run right'" -
which may be challenge enough, - and hope for the best.

Get an estimate.
