What transformer do I need?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 30, 2002 4:24 PM
I'm new to this, and am adding 2 to 4 remote swithes to my Lionel O-27 set. Could someone give me advice on what additional transformer I should get to power these switches, and any other accessories I get in the future? This is a new set that came with the basic 40 watt/3 amp power system. Thanks!!!

I think that your 40 watt should do to power the train and the switches as you won't be throwing more than one at a time.
Lionel used to include a book with their sets that gave the wattage required for their locos, cars and accessories. Do they still do this? If you're planning to run multiple trains, you may want a controller per train. Does your transformer have 2 terminals or more? You need the one with more than 2 (usually 4) (8 if you really splurge) to operate accessories when the train is stopped.
If you don't have the booklet, check out the books on operation Lionel trains at your library or hobby shop or a big book store.

Like David said the 40 Watt transformer is adequate for what you have now. Keep in mind that the rated output of an AC train transformer is the total output and is not seperated between track and accessory terminals. Therefore if you plan to have lots of lights and operating accessories in operation while your trains are running go for the higher wattage.

There is a great article here on the site titled Power Trip", by Terry Thompson, on what kind of transformer a toy train layour needs. It should answer your questions and it gives typical wattage requirements for locomotives and lamps.
