IMPORTANT!!! Gluing clear plastic!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, December 24, 2004 8:23 PM
I have a Walthers ADM Grain Elevator kit that I am assembling. I have been using super glue for the construction of my Rolling Mill, but this kit has LOTS of windows. I know that CA has a tendency to fog clear plastic that it comes in contact with. THe plastic that the windows on this kit are made of, however, seems not to do that (two pieces of sprue test glued). Does the fogging happen a while later or should it be evident early on? I know that on my Athearn locomotives I use white glue to secure the clear parts. Should I do that on this model? Another thing about the test CA joint is that it didn't seem to bond well. I tried to create two flat surfaces, but could the bad bond be due to round surfaces? I would like not to have to go buy some special glue for clear plastic.
::End rant::
Thanks,
Reed

I've used just plain old Elmers White Glue, no fogging or crazing, and it dries clear.

Reed,

I use the liquid cement that I assemble the rest of the structure with, with no fogging problems. (I usually apply the LS to the window frame then press the plastic window into the opening.) Didn't realize that Elmer's was an option...

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.

You could check out Testors Model Master "Clear Parts Cement and Window Maker", it's designed for gluing clear plastic.

Happy holiday to today's forum users
Try microscale "Micro Kristal Klear"
I recently got some and I'm pleased so far - both sticking clear plastic and creating small windows

Thanks for the replies everyone. I used Elmers white glue and it seems to be working fine. Well, I got an airbrush compressor for Christmas so next time I am at my Dads house I will try to weather the inside of my rolling mill and finish assembly. I also got a decoder and a small structure. I have one more set of presents to go through here at my mom's house...
