As soon as there are atomic trains I will be a fan.
Does anyone realize that an atomic locomotive would be a steam engine[:D]?
They just use the nukes to boil water. From there on it's a regular steamer.

I don't know...

They could use nukes to boil the water to drive the turbine that drives the generator that powers the trucks. Kind of lilke a nuclear Veranda.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

What I'm worried about is that if it has a meltdown running over the Rockies, will it melt through to Australia or New Zealand? Will it automatically convert itself to metre guage when it comes plowing through the soil of either the Outback or the South Island? It might cause a Wombat stampede, anyone ever consider this?

That would be a horribly inefficient use of a nuclear power source. With today's technology there are so many other ways to convert the radiation or heat to electricity. And who's to say by the time we get a reactor that small that a neutron motor won't be developed.

wasnt there a loco that was radiation hardened tor moving nuclear reactors. i am sure i have seen a pic of it.

peter

there have already been reactors small enough for a locomotive. theck out the pic at the cottome of this page.
http://www.air-attack.com/page.php?pid=18
it was a test reactor flown on the NB-36

aah i found it!!

not a very good photo but check this out.

the cab window is nearly 4 feet thick!
used for testing nuclear jet engines.so it is perfectly feasable just not a very clever thing to do!

If they use the nukes to boil the water, could they not also sell hot dogs and oodels of noodels out on the veranda at every train station kinda offset the operating cost?

It can be done, but i don't think it will ever happen...it would be too much of a security risk...a terrorist could stop the train and steal the fuel rods for other than honorable intentions...if it was done, it would cost too much to hire a company of Marines to protect the engine from such encounters...chuck[:D]

There were actually serious plans to build a nuclear-powered locomotive in the 1950's. The proposed locomotive would be made of two units: one on 9 driving axles and the other on 3 driving axles and 2 carrying axles. It would have been 160 feet long and weighed 396 tons, 359 of which were on the lead unit. It would have had 9000-12,000 horsepower. The project was scrapped, however, because of the dangers of an atomic locomotive and also because the cost of building this engine would have been twice what it would have cost for four diesels of equal power.

Actually, seeing the title of this topic, I thought that it was about the movie Atomic Train. If you think you know how bad some movies with trains can be...you ain't seen nothing until you've watched this piece of garbage!

Since the government has been closing nuclear power stations as fast as possible I have but one comment, Too bad. If we had about 36 new nuclear power stations we could save our coal and natural gas and make a cheap sourse of power for the railroads if they would like to string wire. Then GE and GM could build straight electrics that would be far more fuel efficient then even todays latest diesels. Nuclear power should be the first choice for energy not as a last resort as it is now.

You would have to use a digital camera to take a picture of it, the radiation would fog regular film.[:)][:)]

There is no such thing as a bad day of railfanning. So many trains, so little time.
