There were actually serious plans to build a nuclear-powered locomotive in the 1950's. The proposed locomotive would be made of two units: one on 9 driving axles and the other on 3 driving axles and 2 carrying axles. It would have been 160 feet long and weighed 396 tons, 359 of which were on the lead unit. It would have had 9000-12,000 horsepower. The project was scrapped, however, because of the dangers of an atomic locomotive and also because the cost of building this engine would have been twice what it would have cost for four diesels of equal power.

Actually, seeing the title of this topic, I thought that it was about the movie Atomic Train. If you think you know how bad some movies with trains can be...you ain't seen nothing until you've watched this piece of garbage!
