Ulrich update:the account is set up {now that I have a vehicle to drive that will brake safely} It has Ulrich's name on it, but not as a co-owner, {can't without him here}. I deposited what checks I have.
It will cost us $75 minimum for transfer wire fee. SO whatever we bring in will be reduced bu that amount..I may kick in more money to help offset it, but I cannot afford $75 plus the donation I already gave.
To THOSE WHO WANTED TO DO CREDIT CARD: I checked, NO the account cannot take credit cards directly. i have no way to process them.
THANKS TO those who were genreous! I think I have one more in the mail today??
I WIlL Send a copy of the wire to those who donated so y'all know I actually did it!

Ken ... Sounds like the E-units have a lot of use. They served you well.
Rob ... I like the feed store. Unitrack is sectional track. I don't like that because where a curve track connects with the straight track can cause derailments becasue couplers do not line up. It is best to have short railcars and short locomotives if you use sectional track.
Galaxy ... My PM's still do not work. Anyhow, I am glad you do what you do. ... Do you want to start March's Diner if Ulrich is out of action? I thought the two of you would take turns, but I don't think he is available.

***Garry, I will check mine. I am using the two largest radius tracks they offer (28 3/4" & 31 1/8"). Have read that some folks replace the standard UniJoiners with Wire joiners??? I do not plan on running any trains fast, so perhaps that will also help. Figured Kato Unitrack would be an upgrade from the Bachmann E-Z track, plus the wider turns offered. Guess I'll find out.

From what I have read here in the forum over the past few years, and with several PM's back and forth with Ulrich, I have concluded that he is truly a gentleman, and that he has fallen into a situation where he really needs our help. He has not asked for it, but I am glad that he has appreciatively acknowledged what you have started. I am putting a check in the mail to you tomorrow to double my original contribution.
I encourage those who are able, to please send a contribution in. And, to those who have already been generous, if it is in your heart and financial means, please consider a little extra.
It's my hope that we can exceed the goal of $900 by a healthy margin.

Well.... There's bad news and there is good news! The bad news is I'm still basically deaf... The good news is I haven't lost any more hearing (what little I have) in the last 6 years! They are sending my hearing Aids in to be cleaned and upgraded. They have my right one now and when that comes back in I will have them send in the Left one. In the meantime I have a "loaner". Oddly enough I am hearing more with the loaner than I was with the reguar hearing aid... Probably time for it to go back to the factory and be completely checked over. The technician also turned up the volume on the T-cell (left ear) two notches (about 5 dB). That should help me be able to hear better on the telephone.
I went over to the pharmacy to pick up a couple Rxs. As I was walking up to the counter I passed a 40 something year old woman who looked familiar to me. She is a lovely Asian lady... She smiled and nodded her head like she may know me, and I smiled and said, "How ya doin'!" She immediately stopped and grinned from ear to ear and Said, "Mr. Howard?" I said yes and immediately got a huge hug from her. I looked at her and said, "Buongen?!" She grinned and nodded her head and gave me another hug. She was a very special student of mine when I first was teaching in Geneva. I haven't seen her in probably 20 years. Buongen was a refugee from Laos at the end of the Vietnam war. She came here with her cousins family. Ended up being adopted by an Art teacher in the High School. She joined chorus although she spoke very little English as they had only been here a short time. Buongen was 18 I believe when I had her as a 7th. grader in class and in chorus. By the end of 8th. grade she was speaking very well and her Adoptive Mother told me that being in chorus helped a lot with pronunciation of English words. A couple years later I talked with her "Mother" and was told that Buongen wanted to quit school as she hated High School! After a long discussion with the guidance councilors and her "Mother", they found out that the only thing she had liked in School was chorus and she wasn't allowed to take it in high school because she had to take English as a Second Language class that conflicted with chorus. Long story made short. The Mother insisted they find a way to get her in High School Chorus and Buongen not only graduated from high school, but went on to college. She now works at the local Hospital! I'm so proud of her I am close to tears!

Ulrich Update: Thanks to a large donation form the LONE STAR STATE OF Texas, and another donation from Ill-i-noise today, we WILL, I think, exceed our goals!
BUT that will be great, first the fees have to be paid, and I may just make my donation up higher to cover them, and second: I will encourage Ulrich to save the extra for next pair of special glasseses he will need down the road!

Good morning, all. I'm back from skiing and back to working on the railroad. As much as I enjoy skiing, going out day after day in near zero temperatures makes it far less enjoyable. Lots of base, but no fresh top snow for a while. Combined with the cold, that makes for a hard skiing surface. With little snow to push around, a skier doesn't have much work to do and ends up going faster than he would in fresh snow, so he doesn't warm up from exertion and he gets even colder from his speed-generated wind chill.
Back to the trainroom and back to the grade crossing project. I fired up both of the circuit boards, connected some photo transistors and ran both flashing lights and the Tortoise that will drive the gates. Now, I've got to experiment with various light levels and the IR LEDs to figure out how much I'll need to shroud the detectors so they'll work whether the room is light or dark.

SUN! The sun is out and shining this morning! WOW! The weather guessers say it could get all the way up to 27°F from the -8°F it was over night.... I will be spending some major time seeing if I can get the solar panels cleaned enough to fire up today. Still have only gotten .48 kWh for the whole month. In July on a sunny day, they will do that in 15 minutes or so.
Hope to get some quality time down cellar in the train room today as well...

Heh, heh, heh..... I have managed to clean off enough of the solar panels to actually get the the system fired up! First time in 3 weeks! Not doing much of anything but I checkedf down cellar an hour ago and it was registering 2 watts... Ok, as I said not doing much, but there is a steady stream of water running off the curve in the downspout on the South Side of the house. I would imagine the bulk of the downspout is filled with ice. Getting there. I will be back out removing more of the 14" or so pack of sn*w up there. Have 8 panels (18 total) cleared right now with 2 more partially opened up. If I can get the main array of 12 panels clear by late afternoon, the others should begin to clear themselves. The panels produce considerable heat when they are operating and the electrons moving through the resistance of the panels with the sn*w on them create heat as well.
Frank, beautiful dog you have there. Boxers are among my favorite breeds. Very active but also very sweet and loving.
Back to using the roof rake!

In General - Things have been on the bad side last couple weeks. Not much at all here going on RR wise. So nothing to report. Just wanted to stop in and catch up on what yall have been up to.
Due to some serious family health problems i forsee a move in my very near future. All puter AND train functions will cease in a week or so as to faclitate packing up. So much for my new layout. One more time, everything back into boxes.
KEN - if your reading this, this is coming directly from the puter slated for you. Figured id get it all ready to go and test it albeit this is on a Win7x64 platform. Easily reloaded with Win XP. Point is, she works. I wanted to get her up and going so i could get all the specs for you and to get all the peices in one place. Gotta pack up ya know. HMU if your still interested, otherwise into storage she goes.
Dont mean to rush you but time is not something i have in abundance right now.

Been down in the train room. Cleared off enough of the work desk to set up a test track with DC power supply. Have tested the first batch of N scale locos I will sell off on the-bay. I will miss them, but since I can't see them well anyway, those funds will just get recycled into new HO stuff, which I can still see with my good eye.
Heat pump went out in this side of the house the other night. I have been using space heaters until I can get out and find some fuses. Probably wouldn't hurt to just have the local guy out to service it anyway. He doesn't charge much and then it will be ready for summer.

Thanks guy's...for the kind words on my Boxer. His name is ''Spooky'', 82lbs of solid muscle, 6yrs old. ROB, speaking of face...He goes to Pet-Smart a lot with my Son and an older woman had commented that ''He is so cute, I could eat His face''. He is a character. Known as the clown's of the pedigree's, they remain 3yr's mentally all their yrs. They can also be defiant when they want to be. I also never knew they can run as fast as they do and change direction while running so fast. I have had Great danes and Black Labs also and this guy takes the cake. Pic' of a couple clown's together.
