local Hobby Shops // Lionel Challengers // Email Lionel or Bust
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 21, 2004 6:44 PM

I visited a favorite local Hobby shop, which is going to remain nameless for this Subject, and noticed they had eight Lionel Challengers and at least five or more of the Veranda's in stock. I asked what he was going to do with them, and he said he would have to eat them. I have never had a Veranda or Challenger for lunch, so I would guess he was referring to losing money on them just to get rid of them.

I really feel for the local shops that purchased the Lionel models early on and keep them in stock until Lionel bailed. I for one feel Lionel should buy the unsold engines back and not cause local shops to lose money on the stock they took from Lionel in good faith.

We as modelers could help the Local Dealer that we depend on by emailing Lionel about this situation. This particular dealer sells a lot of the big Lionel products and should have to lose money on any Lionel items.

I need the local shops to be interested in this hobby and hope some of you will feel the same way. Don't get me wrong, I still purchase from Ebay and several shops that advertise on the WEB, but the local dealer is very important to my interest.
Please consider email Lionel even though it probably will not help. I would like to them to know we are a very large group of modelers that look out for each other and the dealers that serve us.

Thank you for reading this and even if you don't email Lionel, Thank you for listening to me and participating in this forum.

I'm afraid Lionel has enough troubles without worrying about this minor disaster. In two weeks time the MTH judgement will be be announced. They could be resopnsible for 41 million dollars in damages, making this look like small potatoes. Feel free to email them, but don't expect much of a response.

I agree with you, but I want to make it known to their new Managemnt to play fair with the dealers that continue to sell their products. You might not know this, but Neil Young owns Lionel and has the money to keep it going, but might cut his personal moneies if the judgement had to be paid.

The Lionel name will continue and the Judgement will be appealed until all of the legal attempts either fail or the judgement is reduced.

I would like for us to stand up for the little guy, and as I stated in my post, it probably will not make any differences, but the email will tell Lionel that we are out here. They probably want to sell more of their O scale and O27 items to our readers.

Neil Young owns Lionel?! If that guy is really going to be making the big decisions for Lionel, they are in big trouble. Neil Young is way burned out. Bong hits away!

Sweet Home Alabama!

He purchased the Lionel line several years ago, and started making every model that he wanted, as least that is what i am told. I watched a special about him and the Lionel line that was on TV sometime ago also. I thought this was common knowledge, but maybe not.

He is not the CEO and does not run the company himself. If you remember a few years ago, Lionel was just hanging on and after Neil purchased the company, they started making many new products that are fairly accurate for O three rail.

I believe they will live to make models another day, or at least a few more decades.

I don't think Neil Young is still the owner of Lionel, and even if he is, he doesn't manage the daily operations. Lionel recently hired a new CEO after the initial court judgement in favor of MTH was announced, and shortly thereafter Lionel announced that they were pulling back out of the HO market.

All last year, everyone was telling Lionel to stay out of the HO business, because of the competition. This is how Lionel went under back in the 70's, but would they listen, NOOOOOOO. Now they may just loose their shirts again. Oh well some people are just hard heads and they never learn. I suppose we'll be seeing Lionel on the auction block by this time next year or sooner.[banghead][banghead][dinner][#oops]"They did it again"
