Meeting Other Modelers/Forum Members is Cool--Teffy's Epic Journey
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 25, 2004 5:21 PM
Today I met Teffy (Bob). He is starting a fall foliage trip combined with a few operating sessions. It was a good meeting. Since I know nothing about DCC I took one of my locos and he pointed out a few things about converting it to DCC. He showed me a few of his locos and other items he is carrying with him to the operating sessions. It was a good time and certainly worth a little time to get to meet another modeler/forum member from another state.

He is also carrying a few items to der5997 and Fergie for me. [;)] Boy are they gonna be surprised. [:D] The box they are in is about this high and about this wide. [}:)] [;)] [:p]

Meeting other forum members/modelers is pretty cool. This could be contagious. [:D] [;)] [:D] What do you think? [:p]

Several forum members have ask that they be kept posted on Teffy's (Bob) trip. So I am adding this to help kept them and others posted.

Jim

Knowing that you were probably with Teffy this afternoon, I was thinking thoughts along the same lines earlier. We also have Bill M meeting up with Tom W after finding that they both live in northern Georgia. The fact that the possibility exists is just another small side benefit of the forum.

Who knows, maybe on some trip NOB I'kll be able to drop in on someone.

Regards

Ed

I sure wish visiting was contagious around here.[;)]

I'm so far from a large city, I fear I may never get a visitor[:(]

Oh, maybe someday somebody will drop in, but I doubt it will be soon[sigh]

Oh well, I'm paitient[;)][:D]

Really though, I do like the idea of visiting other peoples layouts. Maybe someday i can go traveling like teffy with my Dad. (more [sigh]ing)

I'd like to see Orsonroy's NKP layout, Juby4Life's modern Rock Island layout, as well as Dave Lotz's BMRR layout of Burlington, IA. But first I'd like to start my own layout...

I agree. I participate in an internet chatroom known as Railchat. ( http://www.railchat.com ) Many of the member have become good friends and I regularly speak on the phone with several of them on a weekly basis. I have also met one in person as last summer he and his dad came out and I gave them a Grand Tour of the Powder River Basin. (My Home Turf [8D]) So if any of you are in the Lander WY area, contact me and we will arrange a meeting.

I will post what I know of Bob's trip so far.

He was in North Little Rock, Arkansas on Saturday and he spent the night about 25 miles east of Memphis, Tennessee.

As of about 2 pm on Sunday afternoon he is in Kentucky. His plans for tonight are to be in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He is headed for Maine and ultimately Canada, then back down South. He does have plans to meet with several other forum members and view their layouts.

Should anyone like to visit with him on his trip just email me and I will see if it is possible.

I emailed Teffy earlier this month and I haven't heard back from him. I know he is making his trip to Maine to see the fall colors. Maybe he'll stop by the train show on the way back. www.gsmts.com

Bill [:)]

I am not 100% sure of his plans and routes. I tried to help set up a meeting for Monday between Teffy and another Ohio modeler but Teffy's planned route didn't cooperate. I do know that he is going to come back through New York City. That is unless his plans change. Like I said before, should anyone want to meet with him please send me an email and I will convey the message to him. If there is enough notice a meeting is possible. Good planning is the key, I will be glad to help anyway I can.

Monday's plans are for the Detroit and the Ford Museum. Then Tuesday (I guess) to Niagara Falls via highway 401. The rest of the trip I am not sure about other than he is headed for an operating session in Georgia. I didn't forget Fergie and John, he will definately be there too.

Bob will be heading up to Cape Breton after he sees John and then down to Prince Edward Island then through Moncton New Brunswick then crossing over to maine through St Stepens/Calais, if I'm not mistaken.

I memtioned this to Bob today. He said to tell you that he did get your info and links. He also said to tell you that the info and links were a B I G help in his trip planning. He was and is very appreciate of your help. He stated he meant to reply to your email but got sidetracked. I for one can definately relate to that.

He won't be at the train show as the dates of the show and when he is in your state don't coincide. Boy can I relate to that one too.

When I spoke to him he was in Detroit at the Ford Museum. He was very impressed with everything there. He said they had everything, including cars, trucks, planes and TRAINS. [:D] If I remember right didn't Henry Ford own a railroad or controlling interest in one? But anyway, he said one of the locos was a steamer with the wheel arrangement of 2 - 6 - 6 - 6. He said there were other engines and railcars there too. He is having a good time.

I am not sure if they spent the night in Detroit or not. I talked to him about 2:30 pm my time which is central time. I am not sure if Detroit is central or pacific time. Personally I would have stayed there tonight and started fre***uesday morning. But remember Bob is a retired bus driver so who knows. But what counts is he is having a good time and will get to meet some other forum members who probally are as nice as Jim [:D] [;)] [:D] . (And let's not forget, get to see and run some model trains. [:p] )

I know Bob was stopping over in Toronto because Teffy wanted to take in a framing show. So the hop between the two cities is only several hours depending on which way he is travelling.

I'm really looking forward to Teffy stopping by on his swing south. Meeting Bill Mathewson was a lot of fun. Getting to know people on-line and then meeting them possibly later is one of the real benefits of this forum.

Ya'll come on down,

Wasn't Michigan one of those states that didn't switch back and forth between standard time and daylight savings time? Don't know if it is still that way or not, but I seem to recall that it was that way back in the early 70's.

I think New Mexico is still that way.

No, MI switches between daylight savings time and no daylight savings time like every other state. Trust me, I live there [:)].

Well, Jonathon, although I do trust you, you probably need to do a bit more research on DST. Not every state observes DST. Hawaii, Arizona (except for the Navajo Indian Reservation part), and most of Indiana do not switch.

And I also did a bit of searching regarding Michigan's history with DST, because while my memory is failing me, it sure seemed to me that back in the early 70's the state was not changing the clocks. It took a bit of searching but to make a long story short, on http://www.statoids.com/tus.html I finally found that Michigan stopped observing DST in 1968 and didn't resume observing it (i.e. changing the clocks) until 1973.

Best regards

Ed

Talked to Bob this evening and he's doing good. He's in Burlington this evening and heading for Portland tomorrow before going on the ferry for Yarmouth. He see's John Saturday and me on Sunday. He's looking forward to seeing Tom and Bill.

He was really impressed with the Allegheny but didn't get a photo as it was to big to get it into the photo!

I'll keep you posted when he arrives.

Fergie

Heck, I was impressed with it too and all I had was a link and a small pic.

Made me mad when I lost the post, not once but twice, stupid internet. [:(!]

I wonder if Bill and Tom and doing as much "getting ready" as you and John have been? Funny how the fear of company coming will do that. [:D] [}:)] [:D]

Of course you could always "rent" a hall and set up the layout there. [;)] [:D] [;)]
Hey, then you could charge admission. I might be on the something. [:D]

I am looking forward to a . . . live . . . report from Canada.

I think we might hear something soon, by Saturday evening by chance.
