Grust Got, Winkel,

Samhongsa, located in Korea, has a Web site that may have the information you are seeking.

Thank you "cacole", but Samhongsa made only the engine of the geep. I was looking on the site of Samhongsa a few minutes before.

I typed "Hallmark Models" into Google and it took me to several Web sites, including some models being offered on e-Bay and dealers who still have Hallmark N-scale brass locomotives in stock. I didn't see a GP7, though. Try Google and see if you can find information about your model.

Glad to be of help. If you drove old Route 66 you were passing through the northern part of Arizona. I live in the south-eastern part, six miles from Mexico. When I was in the U.S. Army, I spent 6 years in Deutchland -- three in Munchen, 1975-78, and three in Frankfurt am Main, 1980-83. Of the two, I thought Munchen was the nicest.

Sorry to not respond to your request, bt most modern Nscalers buy the proven Atlas/Kato/Lifelike split frame & plastic shell design. Check out the new LifeLike GP9-18-20 models. They are nearly as good as Atlas! The only thing missing to date is an easy conversion to DCC.

A brass Nscale model may have some value as a rare collectible, but parts will be scarce and difficult to get it to run or convert to MTL.

Hello Glenn,
thanks a lot for your answer. I have also a lot of Kato/LL/Atlas maschines, but this brass locomotive was a good deal for me. I bought it for nearly 100 US-Dollar and of course it is a locomotive for a collection. I am BN and GP fan and this model is both. I think that there are not so much N-scale modelrailroader in germany who have this locomotive.

Greetings from Dortmund in Germany

Dirk: Notice that you were able to solve your problem with Brucestrains.com. It's my local hobby shop here in Sacramento, CA, and they have a great staff. Bruce is an N-scale enthusiast himself, so be assured that any questions you might have in the future, he'll either be able to answer them or find someone that will. Enjoy your locomotive. Haven't been to Germany in a while--is the Schlossquell beer in Heidelberg still as wonderful as I remember?

Hallmark Models was located in Dallas Texas. They imported models in HO and N scale from about 1970 until 2003. Bobbye Hall, the owner of Hallmark, also owned a very large hobby shop in Dallas devoted to trains.

Samhongsa was one of the builders for Hallmark and made some very nice models in both N and HO, actually the best that came from Hallmark was by Samhongsa.

Mrs. Hall closed Hallmark last year and retired. The old website was located at www.hallmarkmodels.com which is now inactive.

Hallmark probably imported close to 20,000 models in limited editions from Japanese and Korean builders. Some of the quality was questionable from some of the unknown Korean manufacturers, but Samhongsa was always the best and most people agree that if you have a Samhongsa built engine you have a quality product.

Almost every shop in the U.S. that sells new and used brass will have several Hallmark models for sale.

Samhongsa began building brass models about 1974. Early construction was typical of other builders and often not consistently good. Each year it seemed the quality improved over the last. Samhongsa is today considered the premier builder of brass in Korea. With 30 years experience they are also the oldest company still making models for various importers in the United States. Their newest N scale brass engines are built like a fine watch and run beautifully, real works of art.

Of all the brass builders in Korea that have come and gone, and there are probably over 100 firms that have failed to stay in business, Samhongsa and Ajin have continued to provide quality models over the years.

It should be very easy to obtain the 1984 issues of Model Railroading that you need. I see the magazines at almost every train meet that I attend. Possibly just posting a want list of the magazine on one of the buy/sell boards will get you the magazine. The magazine is common and always priced very low when they are at meets. Good luck.

Winkel,
I checked Model Railroading's back issue page:
http://www.modelrailroadingmag.com/html/BackIssues.htm
It only shows issues as far back as 1996. I haven't checked the Index of Magazines at this site for the test report, but possibly you confused Model Railroading magazine with Model Railroader magazine.

Bob,

I looked in my March and April 84 MR and nothing was there.

It is indeed in the combined March/April 1984 "Model Railroading" under the title "Performance Test #47, the Hallmark N scale GP-7". I thought I might have that issue but no luck. Should be no trouble getting a copy from someone that specializes in back-issues.

Currently on eBay is the entire 1984 year of Model Railroading, five issues, at a asking bid of $4.95 for the entire lot.
