Well, so far things are going good. I opened the GP7 and almost immediately found the problem with it. One of the wires from the rear truck had broken loose from the light board. Shoot, it took longer to open the thing up and put it back together than it did to fix it! It took all of twenty seconds to resolder the connection and that includes the heat up time of the soldering tool.I also put a piece of lead sheet in my Bachmann track cleaner tank car to give it extra weight. As it's right behind the locos the weight of the train was threatening to tip it over on curves. Not a problem now. It's strange the things you remember when you're working on something. As I was working on the tank car I suddenly realized I was singing 'Let's go fishin' at the crawdad hole'. Must be forty-five years ago I learned that. My mother has told me many times that the first song I learned (much to her chagrin) was 'Roll me over in the clover'. I was six years old! Where does a six year old learn that! I can't remember! What a riot!Speaking of my mother, she's been moved to the nursing home in Leesville. She's doing somewhat better. She's still quite weak but can sit up for short periods and can feed herself. That's a plus. We don't know yet when or if she can come home. If she's going to require constant care she's better off right where she is. Due to my medical problems I'm not able to take care of her. My father has to work to keep the insurance paid so that's out. My sister and niece have their own lives and family matters to tend to. Well enough about that.

Just a quick stop by, getting ready to take the wife to the eye doctor. I all so stayed up way to late last night! Yep, watching Band Of Brothers again! I think this will be my 4th time this year? Seems they all smoke in the movie.
See you all this evening.

Smoking Comments I know you folks are trying to help, that is a given. Like I said, the comment at the time just rubbed me the wrong way at that moment.

Blood Sugar Wars I have found that bread is my enemy whole wheat or not. Yesterday I started eating 1/2 sandwich, in other words 1 pieces of bread. 2 hours after eating my Blood Sugar was only 125. Guess the more I test, the more I will know.
See you all later!
Smoke them if you got them!
Evenin' folks!
Janie, I think I'll just do the buffet tonight. Everything looks good on it. Please bring me a glass of lemonade to go along with it, Thank You Ma'am!
I talked to the mailman today.... He told me all the mailboxes on the side street in one section got told they have to move them and yes, it was because they didn't pave the road covering the whole area they paved before. he also said I have until snow flies to get it corrected. he also liked what I proposed to fix the problem and said they aren't really that fussy here.
Ken, Put the cigarette down!!!! I do hope you make it with that. You will be glad later... Does the doc have you on Meds yet for the sugar or are you just trying to control it with diet? I was able to keep mine in specs for 10 years with just diet, then it started to get worse and worse. I finally said, I think I better start being proactive on it and that is when he sent me to the Nurse Practitioner who handles all that for the medical group. She was from Waverly, NY where I started my career. If I had stayed 3 more years she would have been a student of mine. Turns out we have a bunch of mutual friends down there.
I just pulled out of my driveway this afternoon when the painter showed up with a crew to start refinishing the siding by the deck on the house. Today they cleaned and did some sanding. says they will be back is a day or so to varnish it. I am glad as they should be done before the solar installer shows up and has to use the deck too....
I got the address and my name on the new mailbox this afternoon and have started to look for some lumber laying around the place to do the extension to get the box out where the guy can reach it without the truck going into a hole. I think I am going to paint the whole thing black when I reassemble it. If weather is good this weekend I will finish it on Sunday.
Later!

Went and overdid it today. My nephew was supposed to weed eat my parents yard this morning. No evidence of anything happening by 1:30 this afternoon so I went down and used a little battery powered weed eater to trim around the house, along the porch wall and cut down the weeds growing up through the front patio. Called my father and told exactly what areas I did. He's hacked off now because I'm not supposed to be anything that requires walking and handling any kind of lawn/garden equipment but somebody had to do it. My nephew showed up later and trimmed along the fences and around the trees. He can't take credit for the rest. Now my right leg is hurting like the dickens and I'm nearly stiff as a board. I have to go down there tomorrow morning to meet an appraiser so he can look at the inside of the house. Big house like that could fetch close to a million if it ever went on the market. My sisters and I intend to keep it in the family if we can. Of course we may not be able to. A place like that takes a lot of money and work to maintain. Just looking at the electric bill makes my bank account scream and faint!
Evening All,
Had spaghetti tonight. Over all I had a pretty good day. I dropped my son off at a mandatory counseling session today, got some lunch, went to the Orlando LHS bought 2 ground throws, hung out at a book store with coffee, picked my son up , took him to work, installed the 2 ground throws and made supper.
I talked to Jon (LHS I like) today and he is working on a customers layout all week and he invited me to join him tomorrow so after my surgeon's appointment I will do that for awhile. Does it sound strange that I miss the construction phase of a layout?
I have my PCP appointment next week and I'm afraid he is going to officially diagnose me as a Type II Diabetic. He wants to see me after I did the A1c blood work.
Ken- Thanks for the forum posting about JMRI. It kick started my interest and MOH authorized the purchase of the PR-3 for my upcoming birthday. MOH printed off the instruction book for me today.
Ulrich- That is a great family photo, also a great video.
Garry- Hope you continue to improve.
Hope everyone has a great night and prayers for those in need.

Had to run in to Reno, 35 mile drive one way, to pick up a CD of all the scans the local hospital did on my wife for our trip to Stanford. They gave me the CD and all the reports they had on file. Wife said she was feeling a little better and wanted pizza. I was not sure about that, but getting any food into her is worthwhile. Well it came back out after only a few minutes.
So needless to say no work was done on the layout.
We have those multi-address-mailboxes. Supposed to make things easier for the mail carrier I guess. Once every two weeks at least, mail gets screwed up going to the wrong house. And since many houses here are empty, and in foreclosure, it takes quite some time to get it delivered to the right place. And that only happens if you are expecting something.
Jeff, do not over do it, maybe I am saying that too late. Anyway take care of yourself.

Jeff- Nice video.

Time for me to call it a night. It's going to be interesting to see if I can get any sleep tonight. I'm not so stiff anymore but I ache all over and my left arm is still weak and shaky. Oh well, tomorrow should be an easy day. See y'all tomorrow.
Howdy ...
Hey ... Has anyone seen Sam of Mississippi? ... It's been a while since he was in the diner.
Ulrich .... I like your steam video. That's a nice old family picture. Our visit to my mother last week included going through old family pictures. As for the forum, I think there were several well intended suggestions, but evidently the new forum thread was knocked out. I assume we are not supposed to talk about it. I don't see a post count, and I don't see where people are located anymore.
Paul ... Praying your wife's treatment goes well.
CN Charlie. I hope your friend continues to be okay. That must have been a real scare. .... Thanks for thinking of me. When I was very young I was growing up along the CB&Q while some steam locomotives were still operating. I recall the ground shaking with each big "chuff". Whistles had a good sound.
Todd ... Do you use chop stick, too?
Ray ... I hope the solar system woks well for you.
Sue ... I think I heard taxes were high there. Here taxes are higher than I would like but not as bad as other places.
Curt .... Thanks for thinking of me. Now I think I was traveling sooner than I should have. Still hurting but trying to ignore that.
On my railroad, I completed repairs for my Bachmann streetcar. It was a "15 minute project".
Do some of you guys have "15 minute projects". .... They are the ones that should be simple and quick, but instead take hours as a seemingly never ending series of unexpected problems delay completion. ... My streetcar should have been a quick fix just changing the motor, but the mechanism in the trucks came apart. It took a while to get all of the tiny little parts back where they belonged.
Happy Model Railroading

Good Morning Folks!
Our weather is back to normal, which means it is a lot cooler now and wet - just in time for the weekend. We are invited to a BBQ at a friend´s place on Saturday, but I doubt that this will take place.
Garry - the post count is back, just swipe over those red stars and you see how many posts the contributor has. The location is still missing - I am sure it´ll be back soon.
Curt - in pre-WW I times, the various state railroads in Germany all had their own paint schemes, which wee nearly as colorful as in Britain. In 1920 all these railways were merged into Deutsche Reichsbahn and the locos received a uniform paint job with wheels, frame and front/end beams in red, all other parts in black. Red was chosen to alert people of moving parts, not to detect oil leaks more easily. After a few days of hard service, the red was more into a brown anyway.
Today, I will be busy learning how to use Templot, a turnout design software based on prototype dimensions and relations. It is not a track planning tool, but can be employed as such if you intend to hand-lay your track. However, there is a tremendous learning curve to that software.
Have a good one!

Great series Ken but I reckon they had far more important things on their minds at that time than the effects of smoking in middle age, sorry but we can't use that as a excuse.

Good Morning All,
67F, 68% humidity, Hi today 87F.
I had the opportunity to log into the forum from IE9 and from my smart phone and I have to admit that the form looks and operates great! Now we just need everyone that uses the diner to buy a new computer with windows 7 and IE9 and that should stop all the complaints and minimize the reports of bug fixes.
What they really need is a MRR APP for the IPhone. I’ve been watching for one to come out. I’m actually surprised they haven’t released one yet.
Ulrich I guess that swipe over the stars only works in IE9? I’m still using IE7 here in the office.
Paul, I hope the docs can help her keep food down, that can get serious after a while. I agree maybe a supplemental shake to help keep something in her will help out? We are having the same mail issue at my Aunt’s old house, there is no renter in there right now and it has one of those mail slots that drop the mail onto the floor inside. The neighbor’s daughter is getting married and we had to walk about 100 RSVP envelopes over.
Well too bad the outside air handler wasn’t the easy fix that means there is a chance you need a new unit. Try and get the highest SEER number you can, the higher the number the higher the efficiency and that means some savings on your electric bill. I’m guessing you have a SEER 10 or a SEER 13 right now.
Ken, I’m pretty dumb about blood sugar, but with my current medical condition I’ve been rated borderline diabetic by the Doc. Is blood sugar supposed to be over a 100 or is 100 the target goal? Next month I have to do the 8 hours of testing again to see if the surgery corrected my PTH scores or if we over corrected the hyperparathyroidism condition. When I left the hospital on July 1st my PTH score was less than 4. Before surgery my PTH was over 300, anyway I’ll find out what my blood sugar level is then.
Jeff, hopefully your mother’s health will improve and she can move back home. The number I see when you hover over the stars is (I think) your member number. Unless you have over 203,000 posts and I know I don’t have over 302,000 posts.
I hear my LHS is in trouble, sales dropped last year and this year they dropped another 40%. Rumor mill reports they are looking for a smaller store to move into. The local Hobby Town moved to a smaller store 2 years ago when their AC bill hit $5,000 one month.

Just woke up from a midday nap. A friend of mine called and asked me whether I could act as a tour guide for some business friends of his from Russia. It´ll be a 5 day tour from Stuttgart all the way up to Hamburg. It´ll earn me some MRRing money as well.

Good morning. Temp-73°, humidity-100%, showers/thunderstorms likely, high-88°, heat index-97°.Have to be at my parents place this morning to meet the appraiser. May work on the layout later. Looks like it's going to be wet today. There's a more than fair probability of scattered to numerous thunderstorms.
Good morning, Chloe. Coffee, Coffee, Coffee, please.
We had decent weather yesterday. Not too hot, not too cold. We each led 7 pitches. It is a steep hill in. What a grunt! I might be sore tomorrow.
Garry, We at least don't have income tax. Sales tax instead. When they add sales tax, I will quit working, or stay in the low income bracket.
Today I plan to do some work outside.

JaBear: Thanks for the photos. That model looks like what was known as "D Model" many years ago. It was used as a slick and carried troops and cargo. The only weapons would have been door mounted M-60 machine guns. Huey's will see service throughout the world for many years, just as the old C-47's did. A simple but very durable and rugged aircraft. It was an extremely interesting and rewarding experience.

Good Morning!!!
Coffee and a waffle please. Yes butter and reeeeeal maple syrup. Thank you. Some of Ray’s stash. I’ll be gone before he gets in and he’ll never know.
Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 96.
Lee- I can’t believe you’ve never heard of Elkhart, Illinois. (actually pronounced Ee-lee-nwah. Sounds French don’t it. That’s cause it is. Just ask one. They’ll tell you.) It’s just bout 5 mile up 55 from Williamsville. Bustling town of 500ish. Little Bar/Restaurant there serves great fried chicken on Wednesdays and great Catfish on Fridays. Just don’t eat there for breakfast. I think they charge that much cause they have to pay the cook extra to get out of bed to cook it for you.
Nevada Paul- If the breaker isn’t tripped and the outside switch hasn’t been thrown (if you have one) then I’d say that something’s more than likely wrong somewhere with the AC . Just a guess. Praying things work out well for the wife next week.
Jeff- I hope your Mother is better about being in a Nursing Home. I hate them but you are correct. It all sounds nice to tell someone they need to tend to their elders and that’s all fine and dandy until they have to deal with it. A lot easier said than done and in todays world, it’s just not that easy to give up a job and survive. Let alone add another expense of care to the mix. And we don’t even need to mention the physical requirements needed.
Garry- Chopstick? Oh, another touchy subject. Yes and no. Yes I can but not usually. I use more at home than in public. I eat rice and as you know, rice and chopstick not mix well no. If I were to pick up the plate and rake the rice into my mouth the Chinese wouldn’t look twice at me. The American customers on the other hand, would stare and think I was a pig and Brenda would…… well let’s just say she wouldn’t be pleased. So I usually stick with fork.
Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Anybody notice anything 'unusual' about the rusty GP7 in my photo this morning?
Chopstick story time.
Put this in a seperate post so 1) it'd take up more bandwidth, 2) It'd add a number to the responses of the diner and last but not least 3) it'd add to my post count . Mainly though so if you're not interested you can just skip on to the next.
So, like I told Garry, at home with Chinese take out, I often, but not always, use chopsticks. Kinda neat and different I guess. Brenda usually does not though she tries sometimes. She has been to Japan and brought back with her several sets of Japanese chopsticks. If you don't know, Japanese chopsticks are different than Chinese chopsticks which I use. Japanese are tapered to a long point and Chinese generally are not and if they are, it’s a very dull point if you want to call it a point at all. With Japanese, you can stab your food and that is preeeeetty much what Brenda does. But they are more difficult to eat with because the pointy taper, to me, makes it difficult to pick stuff up. I'm sure the Japanese would disagree. They are also painted nice pretty colors with a slick finish which adds to my frustration. Anyway, a couple weeks ago, Brenda decides she wants to use chopsticks at the buffet. She naturally can’t stab so I’m showing her again, how to use them. Well here comes Suki. Now Suki speaks English better than most others so she will engage in light friendly conversation albeit very short. So she stumbles by, not our waitress that time, sees Brenda struggling and says “Oh, you not good with chopstick. You learn.” Looks at me and says ”You teaching her?” I said yes I’m trying and she left. This didn’t sit well with Brenda as she took it as rude WHICH once again brought on the lengthy explanation of how the Chinese don’t have all the words we doooo, and if they aren’t that well versed in the English language they don’t know all the schmooze words we doooo, and that you basically have to know what they mean. They more convey an idea of what they mean than the literal translation or meaning of the words they use. And once again, that’s why if you have three different translators for one sentence, you will probably get three different wordings of what they say. They will all mean the same thing providing they know what the person is talking about or the situation, but most likly wordes different unless they give you a literal translation which may or may not make much sense as we see it. But they could give you different meanings if they don’t know what the person is doing or referring to. Brenda does not get this and goes with what is spoken. She gets along better with the others who rarely say anything other than "you want to drink?" "done?" "you pay now?" "thank you real much bye bye". Personally I like the confusion. Makes for more interesting time.
Never have told Brenda I dated a Chinese girl for a few months after high school. United States born from U.S. born Parents, but a full blooder none the less with a very slight accent and only on some words. IIRC she said they only spoke English at home and though she new enough to hold a reasonable conversation she wasn't fluent. If she knew, then I’d probably have to convince her every time that I am not going there because they remind me of an old girlfriend. Been through that before at Walmart with a blonde at the checkout who I was nice to, as I am with most all people, but Brenda swore she reminded me of an old girfriend. Personally, I still don’t think a smile and a response of “Thank you, you have a wonderful day too” was flirty. My wife on the other hand…
Mornin' Everyone!
Zoe , I'll have a short stack of Blueberry pancakes, real maple syrup, a side order of bacon, and lots of dark roast coffee. Yes use my R&GV RR mug please.... hey, ah, don't mean to complain but the Maple syrup bottle is almost empty??? Hmmm, somebody got into it? Probably Todd! OK, I'll just go easy on it today, but get more in for me and put it aside so I can have it too...
Ulrich! Nice video... I think I would love to see those brutes in action!
Currently 77°F here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS with a high in the upper 80's by this afternoon. I promised a friend of mine I would remove a tree limb that fell on their property today... I'll be sure to take lots of water with me. My payment will be a jar of home made Blueberry Jam! She will call when they get back from a funeral they are going to early afternoon. Free wood and Blueberry Jam! Good deal I think.
Got a bit more done in the train room last night. Put down a bunch of ties connecting two turnouts, and started to hook up the electric to the upper staging.
Nice cool photo, Darren!
