Comments on the commissioner's letter to MR forum fan's
Posted by cwclark on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 12:34 PM
The letter by the commissioner is just what has been needed in this forum...There have been many that have complained that this forum needs to be cleaned up from some of the foolishness and other material that have nothing to do with the hobby, which they say; is driving others away...(I myself have been guilty of getting off the subject and going off onto other tangent lines that have nothing to do with the hobby.)... I feel that there isn't anything wrong if we kid each other or make light of a situation just as long as we don't infringe on others' feelings or take pot shots at each other if we don't agree on any particular situation within the hobby..(Remember: There's more than one way to skin a cat)....And I don't mind answering questions over and over again to those new to the hobby..I think all of us that are experienced modelers need to pass on what we have learned over the years to others and without the cussing...(There are small children in the room and they can read at a young age too! )...So what do you say guys?...Stick to Model railroading and discussions about trains and leave the rest of it to a chat room or something?....Chuck[:D]

I totally agree with what has been said in the commissioner's letter [tup]. Being new to the hobby, I need more info about train and less rambling about things that none of us can really have an effect on.

I agree...but locking the 'NES' struck me as overkill.[V] Thanks just the same to Emeraldisle for introducing it. It was harmless fun while it lasted.[:)]

I agree that alot of junk is going on lately, and I suggested to bergie when He put his letter on the TRAINS side it was needed here, but like SCF I wish he hadn't a locked the NES. Here's a toast to you old buddy!

Just a thing about the NES, I never posted on it but read it many times, very entertaining. But it was over 300 page. In terms of computers that had to be taking up a lot of room on the server, which could account for some of the slow service. Don't know if this is true but it would seem that way.

I've moderated several car forums, and we would notice that when threads got over a certain amount of pages (it was a different number for different software, etc., but it would normally start at more than five), it would affect the performance of the entire forum. Closing or moving it didn't always clear things up, they had to be split or deleted altogether.

I e-mailed Bergie about the NES closing. He just thought it had too Mouch "let's beat the other NES's in other forums" effect, and he had thought it had run it's course. I guess I can agree with that, and I respect his decision.

Ya know - Someone could start the "Never Ending Farwell to the Never Ending Story" thread - I'm not brave enough to do it.

Well guys,

It wasn't just about the NES, a number of us here were "flame fanning" over the UP issue "to an extreme". When I started reading the increasing amount of "personal attacks" that some modelers were hurling, I thought about contacting Bergie, but then decided that it would likely "fizzle out".

It's far better to continue to encourage each other instead of firing torpedoes at fellow modelers!

Thanks Bergie, and Amigos!

Thanks Bergie,

"I like my Pullman Standards & Budds in Stainless Steel flavors, thank you!"

I agree with bergie. As i moderate several forums on www.brrm.net/forum i know what he sees. The large therads. and then regular "House cleaning" if you will. We sometimes have to go arround and "Clean the forum" of Dead Theards and ones that may not get resapons but we keep it pretty full. But we don't have very big theards becuase we don't have enough.

I got a different message to you guys when i read it. i thought he was more encouraging non-emotive and civilised discourse, whatever the topic.

If it was the shear amount of data being stored in the system by the 200 plus pages of the NES, why didn't he just lop off the first 200, and let the thread continue?

Cripes people! [soapbox]

Could I suggest that we spend more time putting into practice what the “Commissioner” decreed and stop kissing his rear end with “all hail Bergie” topic?

One more thing to think about (because I’m extra cranky today [|(]), if you really want to put an end to all the useless bickering topics, THEN STOP POSTING TO THEM!! The fastest way to kill these kinds of topics is for everyone to ignore it. In case you didn’t notice, once you post a reply like “this topic is useless” (like I’m doing now), the topic goes back to the top and it’s more likely to get more attention from others who will then post and keep it going.

I’d personally like to hear & see much more of what everyone is doing on their layouts, or might be kit bashing, or weathering, etc. This might be boring to some of you, but I believe that this place should be much more about sharing and learning about model railroading.

Well,,,I've been away all week but back tonight and not to my surprise, the NES is locked. Well thats fine, because it just goes to prove my point. When certain people, who can't stand the thought of having a little fun in this hobby see others who do have fun in this hobby, they just can't stand it so they write to Bergie and get it closed. They just can't walk away and ignor it, they have to ruin it for all who do like it. My deep thanks to those who posted so many times and made the NES THE LARGEST forum topic ever and perhaps the most popular at the time. It probably was time to bring it to an end, but not because of a small hand full of folks who probably take life and this hobby way too serious.

Hey Emeraldisle, Welcome back. Hope your time away was well spent on a beautiful beach in cali, Or watching the rails in beautiful locals. I will be leaving tomorrow for a week long vacation. It's always weird leaving and coming back to find everythings that everythings changed.

If you haven't read Noah Hofrichter post on thi spage check it out. From what I can tell everything done by bergie while you were gone were done by his own free will. It was getting heated on a couple of the threads and I thought about E-mailing him but figured it would run it's course.
