I Need Advice!!!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 28, 2004 8:28 PM
Hey,
I am getting back into Model Railroading and i want to build a set-up. I live in an apartment and i was wondering if anybody had any advice on what size to build.
I was thinking 4x8 or something along those lines. i was also thinking of making it a Forest Scene of a Cement Factory. what would look right in these scenes and what is the best size for an apartment (if there is one). i have some BN and BNSF Locos all Original ATHEARN stuff. will that work with a Logging Scene?

Please Give Me some input...

Your layout can be any size you want. You can build it to suit your needs and space limitations. Not knowing exactly how large an area you have to use, I can't say what size would be best for you, but don't confine yourself to thinking in plywood sheet sizes. You can build any size and shape you want. Once you get that part figured out, you can start sketching in what industries and trackplans would work well for your layout. Or, if you know what types of things you want to model, you can design your layout around them. that's what's great about this hobby, there's no one right way to do it. Everybody wants to get something different out of it, and everybody goes about it in a different way. I don't know anything about the BN or BNSF, so I don't know if logging would be prototypical for them. Then again, who says it has to be, it's your railroad.

I don't think logging would be right for BNSF. 4x8s are nice, but they can be confining if you do not use them right. be sure of what you want, and above all have fun !!

Welcome Back!

I don't know how long you've been away but if it's benn 5-10 years, you'll be amazed at the improvements that have been made.

Welcome Back!!![#welcome]

Heck Yeah! Go for it! BNSF and logging don't mix, but who said it couldn't. And that Cement Plant could be the perfect industry for your BNSF trains. Again welcome back and don't forget that the possiblities are endless in model trains!!!

Have Fun!!![8D]

Yes Yes BNSF all the way is right. Freight! Freight! Freight!!! Intermodal is what i wish i could do but i'd prolly have to switch to N with the space thing and all, oh and i Am gonna Run HO. Husky Stacks would be nice to I'd Like to get some N and Build a Stevens Pass (Washington) Setup aaaahhhhh The Dreams.

I'd suggest you try building a layout around one or more walls - end to end rather than a 8x4 circuit. This will have more operational interest and doesn't take up as much space in a room - if you build a 1ft wide shelf at a comfortable height you can still use the space around it - a good way of fitting a layout into a "guest room" (The space under the boards can be fitted out as cupboards to store your tools, stock, etc in). You'd be amazed what intermodal stock can be fitted into a fairly small space - my 8x1 layout can handle 3-unit drawbar husky stacks (or will be able to, after I add the planned extension board which will make it 12x1). I'll also be able to operate 5-unit Maxi-IIIs then, should be impressive! (I have a collection of intermodal cars but nowhere to run them except my testing oval).
