Two on one Mentor Program
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 8:42 PM
OK's post , "Advise from kids my own age".

Is it conceivable, possible that a mentorship program can be launched where by an incoming
teen newbie can be teamed up with some of you more proficient pros to adivise , guide, instruct
start up basics.

No other forum has one. This way a newbie teen could have the potential assistance from a
two or one on one direct human link.

I flunked MR 101 so I'm not certified until the summer term is over, that is, if I can climb the grade.

I kind of think there is some of that going on here already on an informal basis. I am totally amazed at how many school aged members are hanging around here lately. I think it's great.

As nice as the mentoring idea sounds, it may be slightly limiting. By keeping it open like this more ideas can be considered, and you never know where the next great one might come from. Beside, I'm not sure that most members would want the pressure of any kind of commitment.

Now layout design is one of those things where too many ideas can get confusing and overwhelming. I have worked with a few people one on one doing design work. I have one here that I have been stewing over for a few weeks now, and I need to get it done before I take on too many more. On the other hand, the one I have is for a guy who doesn't even have the room built yet, so it isn't like he's in a hurry.[swg]

Nice Idea. But there is one problem with it. In my area, get three model railroaders together, you have yourself a reagonal convention. Newbies are welcome of course, But none to be had. (Model building is kind of a generational thing in this area i have noticed)

However, anyone needs any help, advice, or just some Ideas bounced at them. Will be more then willing to help out.

i agree with BigBoy2004 that it' going on in an informal basis. Though topics sometimes get's heated it seems any question you ask get's answered in the long run. I have learned so much in the couple of months I've been a memmber. After the first month I had already expanded my empire and really got into the hobby.

I love this forum because I can get hundreds of peoples opinions on a topic where otherwise it would take a lot of research to find. Plus you have multiple other forums that you can search through. So for the Newbies out there (which I am at model railroading though I've been playing with trains since I was a kid,you can see the difference this forum has made in my mrr) feel free to ask any question you want, search all the topics and have fun.

Not to single anyone one out but coldcrow has come onto the board and you can tell he's hooked one the hobby and isn't afraid to ask. He's actually asked some questions that when I read them I thought, Why didn't I think about that.
When I went through my eagle scout interview someone asked me how I would thank the adults who helped me get through the long path to eagle. The answer he was looking for was sharing my knowledge with the new scouts. I Think this would be a great thing for a new modeler to do later in life whwen he wants to progress the hobby by just sharing their knowledge they have learned. So in closing ask away and share your knowledge and thanks all who are willing to reply to all the stupid questions us newbies have.

The pros have spoken and with no scale segregation it would not be functional.

Please don't go giving our young friend too much credit for the photo. He didn't take it, he's just borrowing it.[swg]

One more thought on the mentoring idea, and that is, not everyone is an expert at all aspects of the hobby. I know that I'm not. I am very good at some things and lousy at others. So depending on the question, I may have the answer, or I may need help too.

So perhaps the best plan is for the MR forum "braintrust" to just continue to chip away at the problems as they come up. Let's borrow from the UP and say, "We can handle it" [;)][8D]
