Answer to some of our woes!
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 16, 2004 6:52 PM
I know some of you have had some issues with long signatures and photos and have been upset with others because of the hassles and grief the extras are causing you. But did you know that under your profile setting you can disarm those features. The following is taken from that section of "Your Profile"

Board Display Settings

Do you wi***o view members signatures when reading posts? Yes No

Do you wi***o view images in posts, such as smilies and posted images? Yes No

Do you wi***o view members avatars when reading topics?

I hope this helps

Great! Maybe now I can post a photo on my signature. Would that be alright? I may not even do it anyway, because the GIFs would have to go.

Easy Mark, stick with what you have. I personally don't want to resort to using those options, I think that they are overkill. Beside, if we turned off our photos, what would we see on Fergie's photo topic???[?][:D]

I like seeing the signatures. At a glance I can easily spot you, Fergie, 4884, Dave, Lupo, Hawks, and a number of other members. The secret is to keep then constant and distinctive, but small, so as not to over power what we have to say.

Alright. I think the GIFs are unique anyway.

Well, how about that. A couple of problems eliminated that easily. Thank you.

Now if we could get people to stop adding to the nonsense posts so they'd stop pushing the content-driven posts down the list, we'd be all set.

So, I'm new to this board. Just found it today. Since we can block avatars the implication is that we can also have them, but I see no where to choose or upload one. Anybody know about this?

Here are some sig guidelines from another forum. Since most of this does not really apply here, They have some good rules. Plus there's no one to enforce them [;)]

*Signatures will be no longer than 5 lines.

* Signatures may contain an image, but they can be no larger than 250x100 and you are only allowed 1 image in your sig.  An exception to this is if you have multiple small images, but collectively they do not exceed the 250x100 dimension limit.  Or....

* You may have a banner-sized image with the dimensions of 468x60 or smaller.

* Also, images that are exceptionally large in filesize (not dimension) should be avoided, as they slow the loading and scrolling of pages, particularly for those who do not have broadband access.

* Signatures may contain a link to your personal site. However, advertising is not permitted.

* Signatures are expected to follow the same guidelines as posts, which means no flaming, no swearing, no personal attacks, no HTML, and no adult material.

* A good general rule is: If your signature is taller than your post, it's probably too long.

OK, I think I've figured out what is going on. I administer another BB that uses different software. The avatar is actually the graphic that goes where our "stars" for number of posts are showing up. Some admins seem to have official avatars. see Bergie's post at http://www.trains.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13051. So they must have it set up so that users don't have access to this feature. Thus the only way to add a personalized graphic is in the signature. And YES, it should be kept very small!

The problem is, THOSE SETTINGS DON'T WORK. I have "smilies" turned off, but the damned things are still all over everyone's posts, like a plague of hideous bugs.
