Sharing the hobby in a very unlikely place......

Just wanted to say how supprised I was when I started a new thread about fine scale H.O. model trains on VW Vortex. It seems that quite a few of my fellow VW nuts are also into model railroading, or have fond memories of Dads that were into the hobby. The thread is listed in the ' diecast cars and scale models' catagory. Who would've thought gear heads would be into this hobby. I thought I was the only one ....

Trivia time .... at one time a certain shade of VW paint was regarded as the best approximation of "Russia Iron" on turn of the century steam locomotive boiler jackets. I think it was Polar Blue or some such color.

Yeah Dave -- I had a '65 Beetle in that colour -- hadn't previously been aware of the similarity to boiler jackets, however.
Don't be so surprised 'Ski -- a lot of us are "gear heads" as well, follow Formula One, NASCAR, take Autoweek, are trying to talk the wife into settling for 2 doors in a new R32 Golf !!
Bottom line -- I've always considered "anything to do with transportation" as being all part of the same overall hobby, anyway.

I'm a modeler into boats and flying. I guess if it moves we like it. Just thought I would add that. Joe

Thanks for the replys, guys. I've actually had a guy on the VW website, who lives around Chicago, post a pic of the UP Challanger steaming through his town last year, dragging freight! He said that a week later, the DDA40X made a trip through town dragging a MOW train.
It's nice to "meet" people who share the same, yet vastly different , interests on these forum boards. It's also kind neat to expose folks to the model railroad hobby that would otherwise never consider the trains can be so "lifelike" and detailed. All they've ever seen are the typical box set trains that we all started out with.
As for the fellow modeler who wants the wifey to go for the R32, all I can say is: if you're suscessful, please tell me how you did it !! I'd gladly sell one of my '92 16V GLi's and use the $$ for a down payment !!!
