I could be happy with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge line, Just couple up my private business car ( a drovers style caboose ) to the back and ride one way and drive the engine back the other!

   Have fun with your trains

SP would have been nice, but that was THEN, this is now. My wife wants to own a railroad and run the locos, that would apparently make it a midwestern short line like Iowa Interstate. Owning and running a railroad takes money, staying power. Possibly the best would be a switching road serving a area of business/industries like the LA Switching lines serving the area around East LA and Commerce. Gotta have income.

If I could, I'd own Canadian Pacific. That way I could preserve a piece of Canadian history.

I would own the Southern Pacific in the time period when it could have taken down UP. [xx(]

I voted for ownership of the Pennsy.
The Pennsy would have remained independent.
There would be NO merger with NYC and NO PC.
(no offence intended to NYC or PC fans)

OTHER...most likely the BC Rail. And i think beacouse his screen name is just such a target im gonna Raz UNION PACIFIC RULES a little. If you owned the UP hoss...i might suggest devouring some of their MASSIVE DEBT, restructuring their management, orgnizing their freight schedules, providing ontime service, reassuing investors, and not harrassing modelers with equipment surcharges for modeling their stuff...before you EVEN ATTEMPT to buy or merge with another Railroad. You also may want to consider downsizing your locomotive fleet, reorganizing your overabundant parallel lines, selling off or cutting your unecessary overhead, and possibly learn how to actually RUN a railroad properly...before you repaint something else in that BUTT NASTY armour yellow paint scheme. OK OK OK I KNOW...ill shut up now...but my god who in the HEALTH would want to own a mess like st-UP-id. LOL....sorry U P R i couldnt resist...but it was just to easy of a target...i was just razzin ya. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why have a real railroad? Who needs all the bother of employee unions, shipper problems, weather, NIMBY's and gubmint regulation?[banghead] It's enough to drive one mad!!
In my basement world, I don't have to bother with all that.[:D]

You'd probably have to live in New York City to appreciate it, but the New York Central just seemed to have a little bit of everything. The only thing you didn't see in the city was steam. But four track main, local/express passenger service, freight, again, local and express. Besides, if you lived in the city your choices were few. But you got to see, New Haven & Pennsy along with the N Y Central. Railroading is what you make it. No, I haven't been to Colorado, but I still appreciate what the N Y Central had. City modelling may be a little difficult at times, still the love of railroading is there.

What a fun question!
Yes,I would have loved to own the C&O..After we took control of the B&O and got that road back in shape I would have looked toward the Santa Fe as a merger partner to become the first coast to coast railroad in the US.Of course we would not have today's CSX or BNSF..
