Electrifying Frogs with two different power sources
Posted by CPbuff on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 11:15 AM

I'm electrifying all my frogs on my old Atlas switches! I currently get power for the track from my Digitrax system... My tortoises however are powered by my walwarts that provide 12V to all the tortoises as reccomended in the tortoise instructions... As per the tortoise instructions , it says to get power from the track to have the frog live while switched! (using #4 for frog) and power from the track (#2 and #3) ... My question is : will there be a problem with the two different power sources? Track already has Digitrax 12V already gets power to terminal #1 and #8 strip (Walwarts) and now the tortoise is getting power from the track on terminal #3 and #4 while (Digitrax)! Will the variance in power from two different power sources (although both are 12V ) cause a problem for the tortoise? Essentially #1 and #2 have two different power sources and #3 and #8 have two different power sources?

Short answe r. Yes.      The two sources are different types of voltage. The digitrax is producing a modified voltage with a signal carrier ax current.  The Walwarts are just straight dc current.     Dcc equipment won't run on that Dc current.

A realist sees a frieght train

An engineer sees three idiots standing on the tracks stairing blankly in space

Pins 1 and 8 are the Tortoise motor. Those need to be connected to the same power source and whatever switch you use to throw the turnout. The other pins are for the SPST switches inside the Tortoise to be used for things like electrifying frogs. They are completely isolated from the Tortoise motor power, and the type of power (DC,DCC,AC, etc) is irrelevant.

To switch power to the frog, you connect the two rail polarities to either 2&3 or 6&7, and connect the frog to either 4 or 5. Follow the Toroise wiring diagram.

No, that won't be a problem. Terminals 1 and 8 are used to power the tortoise and are normally always separate from track power. Terminals 2 through 7 are internally switched as a DPDT switch and is completely separate from terminals 1 and 8.

Also correct. Yes

There are three independent and isolated circuits in the Tortoise. The motor, and two SPDT contacts. The two SPDT contacts can be set up as a single DPDT if needed.

Your plan will work fine, and as said before, just follow the instructions.
