Esu loksound speakers
Posted by BradenD on Monday, April 3, 2023 1:40 AM

Hey, guys hope you're doing well. I want to install an ESU sound decoder in my Athearn big boy. I wondered what speakers you guys recommend to get good noise and quality.

Note I can only do a tender install, the boiler is out of my capability.

Scale Sound Systems has a 'Big Boy' speaker.

I have been systematically 'auditioning' my locomotives and rating them for sound in order to rank them for which ones will get the SSS treatment first.

I used the 'Big Boy' speakers in a pair of B&O EM-1s and it made a huge difference in the sound quality.

You will need to carefully solder fine wire to the fragile speaker leads but if you use good practice, tin both the wire and the little contacts on the speaker, you'll be good.

Braden,

I'll 2nd Ed's recommendation.  I've installed JT's SSS speakers in a few locomotives with Loksound and they are terrific.  One was a brass 2-6-6-2 Mallet and I was able to install two speakers in the boiler in parallel.  Wow!  Does it get a beautiful throaty chuff - even at low volumns! YesCool
