Need Help with a Shorting OMI Veranda Turbine Truck
Posted by FMB on Thursday, March 16, 2023 12:56 PM

Hello All,

Recently purchased an OMI Veranda Gas Turbine.  The rear truck was not picking up electricity.  I've diagnosed the issue to the point of there being some sort of short in the truck it's self.  In reviewing the truck/taking it apart and carefully reviewing the works, I'm not seeing where the problem is happening.

Anyone experience this or have suggestions on how to troubleshoot/resolve the issue?

Thanks,

-FMB

The link may not be your engine, but it will let others who are brass ignorant, like myself, see what we are talking about.

I'm replying so others will see.   I know some steam locos pick up from one side of the loco and the other side of the tender.  Don't know it this is the case here, but if the trucks on the tender get turned 180 degrees, it won't run.

And, of course, check to make sure someone didn't reverse one of the wheelsets so the insulated wheel is on the wrong side.

There's lots going on in those truck sideframes, such as brake shoes plus it seems there are some close clearances between the wheel face and inner truck sideframe.

This link has additional photos showing the underside truck arrangement:

Good Luck, Ed

Thanks @BidDaddy for your information.  That link is very close to mine, main differnce is mine has a round fuel tank and came in several numbers (mine is #61): here's a very similar one/different number

In further very close inspection, I found two issues... 1) one wheel was turned around with insulator on the wrong side and 2) a tiny [magifying glass size] burr was also present!   Got all that fixed and loco electricity is all working well.

Next question (probably should be a seporte requets?) :)  I'm now noticing the "drive shaft" between the motor and the truck gears is slipping... the plastic head with "ears" is slipping around the metal shaft when pulling is hard.  Any suggestion on glue or other fix?  or should I just buy a new drive shaft?
