As indicated, he wants sound - Loksound specifically. He's not comfortable opening the engine up to look and online documentation seems to be scarce. I was hoping to get a jump on it and order the decoder now before the engine arrives and minimize my turn around time.

My advice is to wait until you have the locomotive in hand. It could take any one of decoder interface such as 9pin JST, 21 pin, 8 pin or even the next 18. Do you want sound or just motor and lights? I recently did a motor only decoder for a friend that the documentation for the locomotive said NEM 8 decoder that actually took a 9 pin JST. That too was an Athearn.

An acquantance of mine is sending me an HO Athearn Genesis Challenger to install a sound decoder in and I can't find what type of decoder it takes.
It is from the 2017 run and is DCC Ready (ATHG97747). I'm assuming (shouldn't do that) it would be an 8-pin variety, but I'm not certain. Anyone know for sure ?
Thanks, Mark.
