Removing screws from drivers on an ATHEARN GENESIS 4-8-4 LOCO
Posted by Hawks Rule on Sunday, May 2, 2021 5:19 PM

Hello,

I am still working on repairing my Athearn Genesis 4-8-4 Loco.

I want to remove the screws #175 from the drivers.

My question is do these screws just come off like any screw by using a tiny ratchet and turning counter clock wise?

Is there anything that I have to know before I do this?

I don't want to break anything, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks. " />

I'm not prepared to say that it's true for all scale steamers, but I have yet to see a sheet in any of mine, from four different suppliers/importers/brands, that cautions the user to use counter-clockwise motion to back out the bolt to, say, swap out a traction tire, or to switch to included metal tired drivers in favour of the traction tired drivers. I think you'll find it's a standard thread.

There are hex head driver screw drivers. That are made for these. You will have to measure the head of the screw and get the correct size. But I bet they are metric.

You never know for sure, so measure them to make sure.

I do have a set of Hex Head Drivers, so I will just unscrew them like all other ones, counter clockwise.

I wanted to be sure with this expensive Loco.

Thanks to all for your help!

If real tight, a drop of very light weight oil will help. A little trick for you- when you try to take them out and you fell a lot of resistance, give them a slight turn to tighten-this some times will break them loose.

proceed with care!
