Loksound 5 and AUX output max
Posted by tstage on Friday, April 9, 2021 8:11 PM

Does anyone know the maximum output of the AUX functions for a Loksound 5 decoder?  I'd like to wire two SMD LEDs in parallel on AUX2 but don't want to overload the function.  100mA sticks in my mind but I can't find it listed in the Loksound 5 manual or on the ESU website.

Appreciate the help...

Tom

250 mA each.

Thanks, Ed!  Where did you find that?  Or did you pull that out of your memory banks?

I'm laying two 1206 SMD warm-white LEDs side-by-side and soldering them together in parallel.  These will backlight the firebox in my brass 2-6-6-2 Mallet to mimic flicker.  To let the light through the firebox I drilled #80 holes in the brass backhead:

Before installing it on the backside of the firebox, the LEDs will receive a single coat of 2:1 Tamiya X-26 clear orange & X-20A thinner.  I tested it on a single 1206 SMD LED with a 1.5K resistor and it emits a very similar hue of orange-yellow from color prototype footage I've been able to find on the internet of an open firebox in a steamer.

As you can see the firebox is closed on the model.  However, the tiny holes in the firebox should at least emit enough light through into the cab to give the impression that the firebox is open from time-to-time.  The flicker is presently activated by pressing F6.  I'm going to see if I can remap coal shoveling (F11) to F6.

It doesn't exactly jump out at the reader but it is buried there on page 10 of the quick start guide:

Ed,

I had V.8 (June 2019) of the Loksound 5 manual and that spec is not included on pg. 10.  The page that you posted is from V.10 (April 2021), which I just learned of and now have downloaded from the ESU website.

Thanks for the info...
