So, got my new decoder installed, along with new LED bulbs front and back, now need to install a speaker. Have a Soundtrax #810113 (35mm x16mm) ordered as recommended by ST. Wondering if any of you have put a speaker in one of these units and if so, where did you position it? Front and rear of the unit has some pretty large lead weights in the front and back which take up quite a bit of room. I could reduce one of those weights a bit to make some room but would rather not. Another thought is to place it inside and near the top of the cab. Imagine placing on top of the decoder is not a good idea. Any ideas?
reasearchhoundFound a good article online, complete with excellent photos, showing exactly where and how to position a speaker in that unit.
I have heard good reviews from this outfit.

I'm planning to buy a few to try them myself.

Scroll down a bit and check out the curved speakers for HO cab roof installation that SBS has:
SBS4DCC - Sugar Cube Speakers
There was a recent DCC Guy (Larry Puckett) video on YouTube where he uses one of these speakers in the cab roof of a small Alco switcher model (barring variations between model manufacturers, Alco switchers and road switchers have the same cab roof contour). No worrying about sealing up the cab, the whole thing is a speaker in an enclosure that just fits up under there. Also usable in steam locos.

I was going to say I've heard 4 iphone speakers, downward firing, over the trucks on either side of the gear boxes. I've not done this configuration for myself yet, but a fellow at the musuem had one and it sounded pretty good.
So, follow up on this thread. Spent yesterday modifying the speaker and the cab of the loco to get it installed. Think it may finally fit but it was much more difficult to do than anticipated. The issue wasn't the width (16mm) or length (35mm) of the speaker but the depth (8mm). If it turned out I was unable to make this speaker (Soundtraxx 810113) work I would order a ST#810112 instead - Slightly smaller dimensions for width and length, but more importantly, it's 5mm in depth. May still end up doing so if the sound quality is poor due to it's placement, but if all functions, I will leave well enough alone for now.

Ed,
I just installed a couple of the SSS 19mm OD "Boiler-Barkers" in the boiler of my brass 2-6-6-2 Mallet and they sound terrific! JT designed the sugar-cube speakers and optimized them for the 3D printed baffles. I wired both speakers in-parallel and am very impressed with the sound.
JT's full-time job is as a recording engineer so he knows what he's doing in regard to speaker-design. And he's a local (OH) guy and a member of the Mansfield MRR Club.
Edit: Here is a couple of photos of a 19mm OD x 20mm Boiler-Barker (BB):
Wanted to install the larger 21mm OD BB but it wouldn't clear the gear towers.
Here's what the 19mm x 20mm and 19mm x 15mm wired in parallel look like inside my brass 2-6-6-2 Mallet:
To the OP, Scale Sound Systems makes other size baffles for diesels as well as steamers. And I thought the cost comparable to other speaker/enclosures on the market.
FWIW...
