Looking for tips about decoder setup
Posted by Martin4 on Sunday, February 7, 2021 10:44 AM

Hi everybody,

I would like to get some tips about the best way to setup decoders for speed matching:

- Is there a correct order for adjusting minimum voltage, maximum voltage, speed curve in order to avoid some settings fighting each other ?

- When correctly adjusted, is there a way to transfer the setup to other similar locos ?  I use Decoder Pro on a Mac. Cannot use LokProgrammer that doesn't run on a Mac.

- I have many brands of decoders: a lot of NCEs (most non-sound), many ESU LokSound 5, some Tsunamis, a few TCSs, a couple of Atlas. Can I get the same functions to work from the same buttons ?

I use NCE Power Cab with a SB5 Smart Booster.

Thanks.

Getting them to all use the same functions is going to be the hard part. THe Loksound decoders are pretty much infinitely configurable, so you can make them act like any other decoder, but matching sound functions between others may be nearly impossible. The common stuff is already the same - lights, bell, hoirn. Just another reason to standardize on one brand of sound decoder.

Speed matching has been covered many times. Search around. Short form: first set them to start the same. The one with no adjustments that starts the fastest is your benchmark. You can speed others up, you can't make the fastest one go any slower. Then adjust the top end. The slowest one at full throttle is your benchmark. You can make a faster one run slower at full throttle, but you can't make the slowest one go any faster.

After doing reasonable speed match on 3 locos that have similar Loksound 5 decoders I had a try with consisting. The trio worked fine but when I hit F9 to put them on "Drive Hold" one of them changed speed instead of revving up; how can it be set to behave like the other ones ?

Also if I hit F8 to stop the prime movers sounds the locos stay consisted and still move together but the diesel sounds keep muted on all of them.  How to avoid that ?

The only workaround I have for the moment is killing the consist and rebuilt it from the start.  Hints ?

F8 is mute, which means that all sounds are muted.  So, if you press F8 on your throttle, the consist you have addressed will go silent...unless I'm not understanding what you are trying to accomplish...

Usually hitting F8 again brings back the sounds but it is not the case here and only the diesel sound is muted; the clicks are stiil on.

F8 is sound on for ESU decoders

F8 is mute for most other brands

All of them are ESU Loksound 5 decoders.

F8 on my Loksounds just mutes the prime mover. The horn and bell can still be sounded. At least I believe that's the default. I'm pretty sure you can choose a reduced level, even down to zero, for the volume while "muted".

Are you certain they are all V5? V5 has had DriveHold fromt he beginning, but a V4/Select only got DriveHold with a firmware update.

The other potential issue is if they are different locos and the sound project loaded in the one that doesn;t seem to respond to F9 for DriveHold has it remapped to a different function key. If it's an OEM installation, the manufacturer should have at least a quick start guide listing which F key does what, either included with the loco or downloadable from their web site. Some OEM projects and their settings are on the ESU web site (most Atlas ones, for example) but others are not (like Rapido). The only way you are going to know if this is changed if to read in the function mapping in JMRI or with the Lokprogrammer.

It could also be that CV21/22 are set to block F9 on that one loco when in consist - if F9 activates DriveHold when it runs by itself.

Okay, I presume you are referring to ESU decoders being muted by default at startup and require F8 to turn on sound and other brands having sound on at startup and require F8 to mute?

2 of them arebrand new M204Ws, the other RS-18, all by Rapido Trains and definitely all Loksound5. For each of them used alone F8 starts and stops the prime mover and F9 activates the drive/hold. Nothing was remapped, I have no idea how to do that. I will look into the CV21/22 settings to see if something can change the behavior. Thanks for the tip.
