I shouldn't complain too loudly. It is a very nice runner. Super smooth and slow starts. Couldn't be happier with that. The sound quality seems very nice to me, and I love the sounds at idle. My next project is to add DCC sound to a Bachmann 2-8-0 using the TCS kit. My jumping off point as to DCC/Sound upgrades.
doublereefedFeeling ripped off. I started looking in JMRI Decoder Pro for that CV... noticed it listed QSI as the decoder. I downloaded that manual... it doesn't look to me like QSI Steam Ver. 7 supports different whistle sounds. Can anyone confirm I am reading that correctly? Tsunami manual also notes that you can set the 2 or 3 whistle blasts to automatically sound when REV or FWD are selected. Would have loved to have that feature!
Wasn't sure how old of a Proto 0-8-0 you had, doublereefed. Yea, I think you are stuck with the whistle that came with the QSI decoder.
FWIW, I installed a TCS WowSteam in one of my Proto 0-8-0s and it sounds great. And it allows you a plethora (20+?) of whistle choices.

To my knowledge, except for the later QSI's, like the Titan variant, the early ones come only with adjustable volumes, and maybe chuff rate and bell clang rate adjustments. QSI offered good sounds for the time, and they were generally specific to the type of locomotive to the extent possible.
That would be outfitted with a Soundtraxx Tsunami decoder. Here's a link to the Tsunami Steam Sound User's Guide - V1.00, which you can download onto your computer or tablet for reference.
On pg. 42 it looks like there are 8 whistle choices under CV115 and the manual says to "Refer to the SoundTraxx website for a detailed list of which whistles are contained in your particular decoder". How to access your CVs is dependent on which DCC system you are using.

Does anyone know if it is possible to change the type of whitle sound on the Proto 2000 0-8-0 Nickel Plate locomotive? (Factory DCC/sound) If so... how? Is it a value in a CV somewhere? Thanks! (I did read the entire sheet of instructions that came with the loco.)
