Wiring help
Posted by DBrink on Saturday, September 19, 2020 9:21 AM

I am building the attached layout. So far the track is finished except for the 2 WYE's.The track isn't wired yet. I have a number of questions about the WYE turnouts and wiring:

  1. Where would I need gaps?
  2. Will 1 auto reverser work or do I need 2?
  3. Do I need to set up power districts for the WYE turnouts?
  4. I have a NCE power cab, I assume that I will probably need a booster. All turnouts are DCC. The power cab is 2 amp, what size booster do you think I need?

There's no attached layout diagram that I can see.

Generally, you will want one autoreverser for each reversing wye or loop.

I am building the attached layout.

To include a photo you need to put it (such as a jpeg) at a hosting site (such as Flickr) and mark it public.  You then can copy the (BBCode in Flickr case) sharing code and simply paste the code as a line in your post here.  When you create or update your post, the photo itself will show.

See the full explanation in this sticky thread in the forum General section:

Meanwhile, for background on the reversing issues with wyes and related gaps and wiring, this site (in Track / Reversing / Wyes) may be helpful.  If you can get your layout shown, folks can make specific suggestions.

On necessity of more power than 2A, it comes down to how many locos will be pulling at once and the characteristics of same.  Idling DCC locos with just sound and lights on use less power.  Rather old locos may have higher current draw motors.  The following item suggests (for HO) a rule of thumb of 0.5A per loco.

https://ncedcc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/203537009-Which-system-do-I-need-All-Scales#:~:text=DCC%20Systems%20are%20selected%20based%20on%20your%20needs,the%20number%20of%20locos%20being%20used%2C%20not%20parked.

I often consist 2-3 locos (not old) for my freights, and have 2 trains going at once.  My 5A system can handle multiples of that.  Tell us what you plan to be running and others can advise on total amps capacity to provide and options for adding capacity to a PowerCab system.
