Yes, you can do that. In addition tot he "Not F8" qulaifier, there are qualifiers for moving - stop to forward, stop to reverse, forward to stop, reverse to stop, etc. So you can add that to the row with the not F8 so the condition would be not F8 and 'loco moving'

Randy, aren't those qualifiers usable only within a 'sound slot'? In the Conditions column of Function Mapping in LokProgrammer I see 'Driving' as a selection. That would turn on the sound when moving OK but it would turn off immediately when stopped.

What I would do is remap the sound function F8 to another function. To the OP this is done in the Function Mapping page in LokProgrammer. Just select a different F number in the Conditions column. I think JMRI has similar capability but I don't have that loaded on this computer so I can't verify.

To modify CVs directly to get this effect the instructions are in section 12 of the LokSound V5 decoder manual. Study it well before tinkering in this area.

It should be in JMRI. If you have a new enough version.

In the Loksound manual, near the middle, they have the function control table. It takes up 4 full pages and looks very intimidating, but the fact is, it is just many rows of the same thing - each row is an individual line where you cna specify things liek what function button, the state of that funtion button, the status of the loco (moving, stopped, etc), a sound slot to play, conditons (states) of other functions. It just repeats 32 times, each row is like a line in a program. SO all those columns, times 32 rows, is a LOT of CVs. But to think of it as 500 CVs is NOT the right way to think about it. It is like 16 CVs, repeated 32 times.

One of those already in there will be for F8 being on, enabling all sounds. The CV for the function has the option for F8 on for this line. If you cnage it for F8 Not on (the "not F8"), then the sounds will come on until you press F8, making F8 act as a mute. There are other qulaifiers that are not set, such as "in motion". Enable that, and the sounds will only come on if F8 is off AND the loco is moving.

It's in JMRI, it just takes a long time to read and write all those CVs. It's easier and significantly faster with the Lokprogrammer but it doesn't make sense for only one Loksound decoder.

That's sort of the default Tsunami behavior as well, and I really hate it, since the loco is moving before the prime mover startup sounds play, just another reason I standardized on all Loksound. Turn on my power, all is quiet, select a loco, hit F8, it starts up and idles away until called on to move out.

I have seen mentioned before and again you mentioned the "rows"  how do you see these rows?  Is this something in JMRI or is this using the loksound programmer?  you said that there are CVs to adjust this do you by chance know what these Cvs are or where I could find them.  I am still pretty new to the programming of these since I just got back into the hobby in December.  I used to be into it before but that was in the 80s and none of this was even thought of back then.  Thanks in advance

So basically do any of you DCC/Cv gurus know how to have the kato sound come on once a moving command is given to the locos?

You could also move the F8 function on the Kato to a different function button. In fact I am doing that on all of my LokSound decoders in order to free up space in F3 through F9 on my NCE PowerCab. I would rather these buttons be available for actions that require frequent or immediate or panic responses. Lighting off the engine can be relegated to some higher function (F10+) which on the PowerCab requires multiple keypresses.

Changing the function button assignment is trivial if you have a LokProgrammer, and maybe with JMRI (don't remember) but requires some thought if doing by direct CV manipulation. The same can be said regarding Randy's solution.

That's ok, I settled on Loksound efore Tsunami 2 was released, and as usual, ESU didn;t sit still and upgraded to Loksound 5. The sound on/off is just a minor annoyance, the ability to load sounds and also do firmware updates to add features without having to remove the decoder make Loksound miles above. There were many compelling reasons to use something other than Tsunami 1, including far superior motor control; there is nothing compelling about Tsunami 2 to make one switch back.

According to the Tsunami 2 diesel manual, you can start and shut off the prime mover using F5 and F6 as well.  I cannot confim though as I don't have any.

Randy, I understand your annoyance with the power up of Tsunamis.  But to you and others, there's an easy "trick" to overcome this on my digitrax system.  I select a loco, hit enter.  Then very quickly ( just a few throttle notches) move the throttle a couple of notices up and then right back to zero. This addresses the loco and starts the start up but loco is sitting still.  Just a work around to the issue.

ESU f8 sound question
Posted by wolf10851 on Friday, March 13, 2020 4:01 AM

So I have read all about loksound f8 and setting f8 to equal not f8 and this it appears is a multi step process.  My question and I don't even know if this is possible is can I make the sound on  my decoder act like it does on my BLI locos.  When I apply track power sound remains off.  Then when a signal to move is sent to the locomotive then sound comes on.  I understand why the sound does not come on when track power is applied as this draws extra power and it is quite annoying if you have several locos on the track at the sxame time and they all start up at the same time however with the way it is set up it makers it a problem when I am setting up a consist on my track with my 2 bli locos and my kato loco.  the 2 bli locos have the sound come on when they start to move but my Kato is quiet.  I hit f8 to turn on sound on the Kato and the sound goes off on the BLI I bit f8 again to turn the sound on to the BLI and the Kato shuts up.  It is a big pain each time I want to consist the BLI and the Kato.  So basically do any of you DCC/Cv gurus know how to have the kato sound come on once a moving command is given to the locos?
