Bachmann EZ AP loco
Posted by C.M.E trainmaster on Sunday, December 22, 2019 10:57 AM

Is it possible to remove a decoder; or chip in an Bachmann. EZ AP loco.(HO Scale)Would this render it DC Only? Really not satisfied /w/ EZ AP. It remind me of my last "power outage on my R.R. with all the unplugging and resettting .Turned out my last "power  outage" was due to Track Nails touching Rails .Figured that out only after I pulled up a bunch of track. Live and Learn. All this happened while replacing a switch on the Main.

Hi,

Welcome

I did a little poking around to learn more about the Bachmann EZ APP. I recall when it was first introduced, MR did a review on it. Not something that I would find useful.

This video will give you an idea of what's inside:

(You don't have to watch the whole video, which can be painful, but at least there is a look at the wiring to the board)

This is nothing more complicated than a regular DCC decoder. With a little added wire and soldering work the EZ App reciever can certainly be removed and the locomotive operated on DC variable 0-12 volts.

The red (right rail) pickups should go to the orange, motor + wire and the black (left rail) to the motor gray wire. (test before final soldering as sometimes manufacturers mix up the wire colors IF they use colors at all) Your engine should, of course, move forward when forward is selected on your power supply/throttle.

You can use a 14-16 volt grain of wheat lamp for the headlight or use a resistor, at least 1000 Ω and keep the LED for the headlight but it will only light going forward (reverse the wires to the LED if it lights going in reverse)

No idea if you have checked with the Bachmann forums. They have reps there.
