the X series, with its four times greater sound memory, allows greater depth of sound files [and more realistic], so yes, i would say it's worth the extra

That's not the only differences. The X has 16 bit sound, the non-X has 8 bit sound. The difference is night and day. SO is the difference to any of the better tiers sound decoders - Loksound, TCS WowSound, or Tsunami2. There's a reason the cheap ones are cheap...

And I say this as a Digitrax user. Love my system, I am not a fan of their decoders, sound or otherwise.

How Important is "Onboard Sound Memory"?
Posted by 2002p51 on Monday, November 4, 2019 5:27 PM

I'm looking into buying a couple of Digitraxx sound decoders to upgrade some DC locomotives to DCC. The two I'm looking at are the SDXH166D and the SDH166D.

The only real difference I can see betweeen the two is the "X" has 16 megabit onboard sound memory and the non-X has 4 megabit onboard sound memory.

What is onboard sound memory, what does it do, and is the difference worth the $20.00 difference in price?

Thanks in advance.
