Thanks Gary, I did upgrade to JMRI 4.16 with a bit of success after just plain working one item at a time.  Version 4.16 did stop the level ”set backs “ so my edits stay in place.  However, new items, I have to adjust the default level to 1 or 2, when I see anything higher than that, they still disappear, but we are moving ahead enough to restore my belief in JMRI!  If I ever find a solution to this issue, I’ll post those results.  Ron

I haven't had this problem, but I would recommend going to the JMRI Users Group at Groups.io and ask there: https://groups.io/g/jmriusers

JMRI 4.14 Layout Panel, Edit Mode, Items disappear to another "level!"

Has anyone come across a problem, upgrading to JMRI 4.14, in that running Panel Pro, Layout Panel (old/existing one used for years) entered into "Edit Mode" to update my screen, once the "grid pattern" comes up, my track and turnouts are there, but all my text and the signal heads that I expect to see, are gone!   After a bit of digging and orbiting in the region of my expected item, I can left-click on the invisiable item to see it's now on level="4" and if I change it to level="1" I see it again, at least until I save the panel.   If I drop out and come back, that item I recovered is gone again, back to level="4".   I exit Edit Mode and I see my Layout Panel in its complete and proper state.  Any idea where things are going in Edit Mode?   All was well in Version 3.8, upgraded to 4.12 but I just began updating things after I have been running 4.14 for a while.   Problem is the same on both my Windows XP Sp3 machines, running the Same JAVA 1.8.0_91, if that helps?  Comments Please, JMRI's "help" documents don't help and I have been running JMRI since my Windows 98SE days up to version 2.14, before I jumped to WinXP.
