So I downloaded JMRI into my Mac Air running Mojave OS but everytime I try to open Decoder pro it opens on the task bar for half a second then closes up.
What am I doing wrong?

I've never had a Mac, Joe, but, if your not already, joining the users group is a good idea.

Did you read through the information on the JMRI site about installing Decoder Pro on a Mac? They often cover these sorts of intial issues. Mike's suggestion about joining the group.io for JMRI is also a sound one.

Joe,
What DCC system and interface between them? I assume the drivers if needed are installed.

So JMRI is crashing when you open it.
The first solution to tech issues is to completely shut down you computer (not just close the lid, but shut it down completely). This is the first thing I do with tech issues, it fixes like 90% of all problems.
Did you download the wrong version, say the windows version instead of the Mac version? That’s one possibility. Also did you download the most recent version?
Does your computer display any messages when JMRI crashes? That could give us a clue as to what is causing the problem.
These are just some guesses, a bit more info may help more.

I joined the JMRI group and posted there.
I have an NCE PowerCab with the USB interface and the driver downloaded. I will try a cold restart when I get home but I don’t think that’s the problem because I have tried that before.
I have the same setup but with Windows. There's a particular sequence in which you have to install/set things up. It may be that the drivers will need to be installed prior to the installation of JMRI. So, you may need to uninstall JMRI then reinstall it again for it to eventually work properly.
2018 Mac Mini here, Mojave, latest Java update -- Decoder Pro opens right up, no problems.
I would suggest updating to the latest version of Java, and also trying the most recent release of JMRI.
Well I reinstalled the driver and JMRI so it does open now but its not communicating with the locomotive.
Incidentally it works fine on my Windows 10 PC. So I now know the USB interface works. I will try updat Java later.

Try the USB interface plugging it in to the other USB port. Often on computers only one port is configured to do certain functions (i.e. sometimes the mouse only works in one port, etc.). This may be what up now.
Does the USB port you used work for other stuff (like your mouse)? If not it may have dust in it. Blowing canned air into it should fix this.
There may also be something in JMRI or on the MAC that needs to be configured for the USB to work.
MACs are weird! Sometimes they do not take so kindly to certain programs, but keep persisting. It may just need another try!
At least you have it working on Windows. I see no reason not to use that. I personally prefer Windows stuff, they just seem to work better.
I am think that perhaps the driver for USB interface is not working
For now I am using Windows.

Umm ... no. The "U" stands for Universal. I've never heard of a single USB peripheral that won't work on any USB port. "Often" in your reply is certainly not correct.

Hello All,
I have been running Apple computers since 1986.
Since Apple switched to Linux code many options that were not available under the "spaghetti code" are now readily available.
Definitely check out Installing JMRI on a Mac.
You said you are on a Mac Book Air.
What OS version?(Including any firmware updates)
What version of JMRI?
What version of Java are you running?
Have you updated Java to the most current version?
What interface from the USB port to the track are you using?
How have you configured that device/port?
What DCC system are you using?
Are you using a separate programing track or are you trying to interface with your current DCC system?
I am on a Mac Mini; OS 10.14.4, the JMRI version is 4.14, through the VCOM port to a Digitrax PR3 with Java version 8 update 211 to a standalone programming track. My DCC system is a Bachmann Dynamis with the 5a booster and the Pro Box upgrade.
What I have observed is if you don't have a USB interface JMRI will not launch and will bring up and error splash screen that prompts you to...•Exit Program•Restart Program•Start With New Profile•Edit Connections
With the answers to these questions, the information on the JMRI web page; along with a Java update, should get you up and running.
Hope this helps.
"Uhh...I didn’t know it was 'impossible' I just made it work...sorry"
cuyamaUmm ... no. The "U" stands for Universal.
My Sprogg II/JMRI will only work if the USB is plugged into one of the ports coming directly off the motherboard. If I plug the Sprogg into any of the front panel USB ports JMRI will not "see" the port.
A few other devices I have, digital cameras and such, have the same anomaly, will only be "seen" if I plug into certain USB ports. Sometimes disabling "USB Root Hubs" in device manager will force them to work after a restart but some devices refuse to work downstream of a USB controller hub.

The OP answered some of these in a subsequent post.
