I have recently discovered it was not uncommon for O Scale modelers in the 1930s-1950s to modify their trains to receive power from an outside third rail, as opposed to the (in)famous center rail. Say if you were to scratchbuild specialized rolling stock, would it be possible to power an S Scale layout this way, or would it be too small? Let's say this this hypothetical modeler isn't much of a rivet-counter, but is simply fond of both S Scale and third rail interurban/rapid transit operations.
