Decoder Backup?
Posted by Scouser on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 3:50 AM

So this is a 2 part question, both related to downloading decoder info:

1. Is it possible to take a 'complete' backup of a decoder (including the sound files) before programing changes? I use either JMRI Decoder Pro, Digitrax Sound Loader or LocSound programmer.

I have a few locos that have Digitrax and LocSound decoders that I'd like to add a few additional sound files and functions. In the past when I've done this I've somehow lost a few of the original sounds so I'm curious if there is a way to backup the decoder so I can restore to it's original state if screw up to much.

2. Is it possible to download a sound file from one decoder and upload it to another?

You can back up the configuration (all the CV settings) with JMRI but you cannot backup the sounds. Nor can you read sounds from oen decoder and install them on a different one, especially not a different brand, the formats are not at all the same. In the case of Loksound, all of their sound files, except for a few of the OEM ones they've done for manufacturers like Rapido and Scale Trains, are available to download from their web site, no need to extract them from the decoder. You do need the Lokprogrammer to change the sounds though.
