I have already cut the shell so I can mount the roundhouse boxcab shell on it, so I doubt they will take it back after that.

Bachmann sells the motor with both worms, not worm gears, for about twenty dollars. The worms drive worm gears.

Just in case, you can put the loco back together and get a replacement loco.

I sent back a two motor 44 ton and got back a single motor 44 ton a few years ago.

I called the repair department first.

It now runs with a LokSound decoder as does the 70 ton. The 70 ton has always been nice.

sorry about the delay on responses. Work has gotten in the way.

As far as running like crap it is definately electrical. It rolled nice and smooth with all the motor and all the worm gears removed.

Not sure what to say. I have had the single motor 44 ton and single motor 70 ton for some time. They both run well. I ran them with DC and now LokSound DCC. I ran mine at the club for about an hour.

Are you sure it is not a cracked gear? Running like crap tells us nothing. How do the front and rear gears turn with no motor?

Last time I had a cracked gear issue was with a two motor 44 ton.

I thought NWSL had gears for the 70 ton but it has been some years since I have looked. It might have been NG conversion.

I have a 45 ton DCC that runs fine.  I am going to use an older 44 tonner to power an MDC Boxcab.  The 45 ton doesn't have a lot of time on it as the layout is still under construction.  I like the rods connecting the wheels.

Anyway, call NWSL they must have something that would work for you.

There is a 70 ton on Ebay right now for cheap, but it probably won't go cheaply

yeah i know. Been in the hobby 10 years. Started with ahm rs2 and never had an issue. I mostly but atlas now but i needed the bachman frames for the  boxcabs. They ran mediocre at best when new with dcc from factory. I even cut the yellow thingies off the motor when i put the sound decoder in the 70 frame.  The 44 ton started with the bachman. Board and decoder when i built it. Now it got upgraded to the nce board. Not sure the issue with these small bachman motors. This 70 ton motor is out of stock. I think the 44 ton will work but i would rather not have to replace them again in a year. Yes thse motors lasted about 2 monts of total run time in 2 years ownership.

Looked on youtube and didn't see anything, but it looks like a very small motor.

I've never smoked a motor and you are 2 going on 3.  Hmm

Bachmann 70 ton motor replacement
Posted by rs2mike on Thursday, January 10, 2019 5:18 PM

so here is my problem gents.  I had/have a 0-6-0 saddle tank from backmann. Was dc planning on dcc and motor fried. Totally my fault. Left it on the rails too long not moving.  But get this i have a 44 ton center cab that was dcc equipped. Ran good last year. I put it on the rails this year to give it a run and it started running very erratic. Inopened it up and checked everything, cleand grease and re lubed put it on the rails and smoked the motor.

so i order a new motor from bachman. At $20 and replace everything.  Put an nce dasr decoder in it(it fits because i used the chasis under an mdc boxcab ) and cleaned and oiled everything again. Runs like a champ.

Now i put my 70 ton upgraded with sound dcc and it starts running like the 44 ton. Take it off the tracks open up the boxcab shell take everything apart and rewire for straight dc. Put it on track still runs like crap.  Clean everything relube and check still runs like crab with newly wired dasr decoder. So i am thinking the motor is getting ready to smoke as well.  What can i use to replace this motor?  Has anyone remotored one of these?  Help please i love these little boxcabs i built.

thanks

mike
