DCC Loco programming with realistic operation - article
Posted by Frolin Marek on Sunday, October 28, 2018 6:27 PM

Hey,  I am looking for an artcle that was in MR a couple years ago, that went in to some depth on programming a diesel decoder for very realistic operations.
This was not a one pager, but details that covered brake effects, momentum, RPMs and such.  Various CVs to set for programming a Diesel Decoder to respond with various real effects, for operations.

This was in a issue of Model Railroader (as I recall), and really think was in a 2016 or 2017 issue, maybe 2015.

There are often short articles in MR on programming tips, this was not one of them.  It was several pages.  And just can't find the issue now.

thanks in advance,
Frolin

Hi,

Off hand I don't recall the exact article but have you looked in the Annual Index that is available on this sitr?

You might be able to jog your memory by looking through the listings there.

Good Luck, Ed

Sometimes you have to ask your question out loud, so you can help yourself find the answer...  ha ha
No sooner than I ask the question, I think I found the issue!

in the July 2016 of Model Railroader,  found  Mat Thompson's  article titled...
"A practical guide to Momentum and Braking".

As I proceeded through the 2015, 2016 and 2017 issues...  one more time,  I found that looking for  "realistic operation"  as key words was not the answer.

I saw the top banner of the cover said...   "3 ways to program DCC diesel consists"  so I went to read the article and found the other was in the same issue.

What i was looking for, was the details on CVs that help in causing the loco to rev-up, then slowly start to roll, when you increase the throttle.  And that causes the brakes to slow the engine, slow and realistically, not on a dime.  And looks like this is it.

If someone knows of other material on this, including for steam engines, please mention where it is, to supplement this article.

Hey Ed, thanks, I did not find the search tool to helpful, but in part maybe due to my selection of words. "Programming DCC" and "operation" gives several results. See my post above, I replied about time you sent you I guess, that I may have found the article. Frolin

The decoder instruction manual (if you don't have one, check online) should give you specifics for the CVs.
