Lokpilots do not have sound

I don't know if the OP mentioned sound? There is another thread here about the 21 pin MTC interface decoder and some incompatibility with lighting functions if the installer wants to keep some of the added functions.

https://sites.google.com/site/markgurries/home/decoders/decoder-plugs-sockets/21-pin-plug-issues

He would need at least four functions with a headlight, mars light, number boards and a red emergency light. These are all installed on the SDP40-F.

The Lokpilot mentioned by Ed is available in 6, 8 or 21 pin configurations.

The following review at about 3:59 shows the loco interior in case anyone is interested:

I like the way Athearn finally eliminated all the wiring to the lights mounted in the shell with that bronze contact block. Yes

I looked at the engine again.  It would seem that it does not have an 8 or 9 pin plug.  Are there paticular details I am looking for with a 21 pin decoder?

Pending any additional information to the contrary, it would seem to me that any 21 pin decoder should work okay.

Here's one choice: https://www.traintekllc.com/esu-73900-loksound-select-21-pin-ho-sound-decoder/

Here's an adapter plate.  Looks like you can plug this into the socket on the loco, and then solder the leads from any type of decoder (I presume that this means a decoder that is for an 8 pin) to it: https://www.dccsupplies.com/item-p-102856/tcs-21-pin-1358-breakout-adapter

I do suggest you put on your list an ESU Lokpilot 397-54615.

I bought a DCC ready Athearn SDP40F and was very surprised to see it was not an 8 pin decoder.  I have never purchased a 21 pin decoder which is what this model requires.  I like digitrax but there maybe better brands, what decoder do you recommend for this model?

Take a good look at the light board.  Some recent Athearn units have a harness with the 21 pin connection, but also have a spot to plug in the 8 pin.  It may not be obvious at first glance.  Either connection point will work.

I'm about where you are in education in this matter.  But I do suggest you put on your list an ESU Lokpilot 397-54615.

My quick search says that the Digitrax one is two function, the ESU four.  I surely think others will pop in with more info, though.
