Silent Mate For A Tsunami 2 Decoder?
Posted by gmpullman on Saturday, August 25, 2018 4:11 AM

Hello,

I recently took advantage of the Soundtraxx "June Trade-In Promotion" and bought two Tsunami 2 decoders and Soundtraxx sent an additional two for five bucks each.

Now I'm evaluating the locomotives I'm planning to install them in and I have two A-B-B-A sets of Genesis EMD F-7s. My thought now is to put the Tsunami sound decoders in the A units (x4) and a non sound equivalent in the Bs.

Originally I was going to have all four units with sound but, in reality, I don't run either of these four-unit sets all that often.

I want to make sure I get a decoder that plays nicely with the Tsunami 2 for the B units. I presume the Soundtraxx 852002 is the correct choice but I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone is familiar with a similar setup?

I have several V4 Lokpilot decoders MUed with Loksound select locomotives and they all play nice. I'm looking for the same compatibility for a sound/non-sound pair from Soundtraxx.

Thank You,

Ed

You should be able to consist all Soundtraxx decoders together.  852002 is the Tsunami 2 equivalent Atlas board.  All the CV settings will be the same as Tsunami2 except of course sound.  DO NOT set cv29 for reversed running, change the solder connection.  Use NMRA Advanced Consisting and not any type of Command station consisting.  Advanced Consisting will allow F11 braking and other special functions to work on all units.

Thanks for the reply, Lee.

Can you elaborate on this advice? Usually I change the NDOT (cv29) in Decoder Pro on many of my other DCC locos and haven't found any problem. I also set the address to the same number when I have a "consist" that I don't often break up. In the case of an ABBA arrangement I only have to change the trailing A unit.

Thanks again, Ed

Any decoder should be able to be speed matched with a Tsunami or other Soundtraxx decoder. No reason you have to have all decoders by the same manufacturer.

I'm going to refer you to the Soundtraxx Users Guide; Configuring for Consist Operation on the cv29 question.  Soundtraxx gives you the settings for Cv21 thru Cv24 for cv29 set normal.  They don't give you settings for Cv29 reversed.

Yes, you consist any brand of decoder together.  However, you cannot use Functions like Soundtraxx F11 braking and expect the feature to work correctly.

Thank you, Lee.

I agree, Stix, that different manufacturers' decoders can be configured to operate in unison but as long as I'm going to be running these units at least in pairs and probably as a four-unit set I might as well have as much compatability as I can.

The "silent" Soundtraxx decoders are only about $21 each so it isn't a big investment.

Thanks again, Ed
