Programming trouble
Posted by astapleford on Saturday, July 21, 2018 12:14 PM

I am embarrased to say that I haven't programmed a loco in well over a year. I use Digitrax "Super Chief Xtra" system with the DT402D throttle.

I just purchased a new Broadway Limited Paragon NWD switcher loco with D&RGW scheme with loco no. 7000.

When I tried programming it with the number 7000 using "AD4=7000" and then enter, it didn't respond, except with "7wr-NoAk". Usually, as I remember, when the number is successfully programmed, there is a little beep and the loco moves, or makes a sound.

Neither happened. I went through this way back, but for the life of me, I can't remember what I did to make the programming successful! What am I doing, or not doing?  Thanks for any help/suggestions!   Al

Al,

Given that it's a sound decoder, perhaps you are needing a track booster with your Digitrax SE?  Sometimes a resistor across the rails helps with this issue.  I'll let the Digitrax guys chime in with their ideas.

I have a Soundtraxx booster "PTB-100" that I've had for some years, now.

Assuming the PTB-100 is working (try reading the address - it should coome back as 3 if it's a new loco), you should be good to go.

When you hit the PGM button to go into program mode, there are several options it cycles through. You wand the Pg or Pd. Po is ops mode and it sends the program commands to the main track, not the program track, and Ph is physical register mode whichis for supporting very early decoders and the Paragon decoders may not even support. So press the PGM button until it says Pg and then proceed with the address setting.

Yes, I use Pg, and 4 digit programming (Ad4=???). I seem to remember having to quickly respond to "Ad4on?=y, but that doesn't seem to come up.

Do you have any non-sound decoders, such as Digitrax, NCE, or TCS, to try? If those also fail (you can try something that won;t mess up the loco, like setting the address to what it already is), try remoooving the PTB-100 from the mix and connect the program track directly to the PGM terminals on the command station. If the non-sound decoders now work, there's definitely an issue with the PTB-100. You can try the Paragon loco without the booster, it MIGHT work. If it still doesn't work even without the PTB, there's probably an issue with the command station and it may need a Florida vacation (meaning, needs to be sent back to Digitrax for repairs).

I finally did it! It WAS that "Ad4on=Y". I had to look for it quickly after entering the loco number. It comes up quickly and you have to be ready to press "Y+". After that, everything is OK.

Thanks guys.

When it comes to Digitrax, it definitely requires some close attention when attempting to programme the address of a decoder and when that address is a long one (extended).  In my case, all but one or two locomotive addresses are long on my roster, so I have gotten used to looking for the prompt and immediately pressing 'Y'.  I'm happy to see you persevering and finding the issue.  Now it all falls into place and you should never have to relearn it.
