I have a hobbytown PA unit with Pittman motor, it goes fine forward but often have difficulty going reverse, it looks like the motor has much more resistance in reverse compared to forward. it's noisy in both directions. I tried the following but didn't solve it, I'd appreaciate pointers for fixing this problem.
I took off the gear tower, the motor seems to spin freely in both directions.
With the gear tower off, I slide the loco on track, it moves freely in both directions. It does not seem to have much binding.
So I am at lost, I'd really appreaciate some help, thanks!
Darth Santa Fe, a member in here, is great with HobbyTown drives. Maybe he'll see your post.

I had a similar problem with a Hobbytown drive. I found that this particular one cared very much which wheelset was in which position. Just re-arranging the positions cleared it up. Or caused it. I couldn't find anything different to my eyes, though.
Also, the gear tower has to be dead square with the truck body.
