OK.  I looked at the link, seems like you figured it out.

I haven't looked inside the brill trolley for a long time.  They have upgraded.  The older versions had the pancake style.

Bachmann trolley engine as per below. I think I have something drawing power from the track as I noticed the power pack warms up as well. I've made some slight adjustments with connection and the hum has stopped. Hopefully I haven't damaged the engine in any way.

What motor does it have?

The "pancake" motor is round, and kind of stands on end, and is fastened to, and part of one the truck assemblies.

The can motor looks like a can, and has a shaft out of each end with a flywheel attached.

Bachmann used both varieties in the trolleys.  The Brill and Streamlined trolly's used the pancake motor, and the more recent version of their trolley used the can motor.

Engine hum?

I recently purchased a HO Bachman PCC car (it was second hand but never used) and for the first few days it flew around the track like a colt let out of the gate. All of a sudden, the engine has slowed down and I can hear a hum coming from it. I opened it up and everything looks fine (no loose wires, lights are well cradled in frame, etc...) What could be wrong?

I'm nervous because my previous PCC car just suddenly died on me at the beginning of this year and these little guys are getting hard to find.
