I called MRC support this morning and I guess I’ll just live with what I have.  Funny that I have four 1730 decoders and I can turn off the function sounds in one of them but not the other three.

I can get everything to work the way I want if I go with a consist and put the decoder with the function sounds turned off in the E7A.  Then I don’t hear the coupler clank when I turn on and off the passenger car interior lighting or the air sounds when I turn on and off the MARS light.

I can live with a weak horn in the B and I never turn on the bells.  I was able to turn down the horn level to almost zilch on the B decoder, sounds almost like an echo.

The decoders are a bit strange, I can turn off some of the sounds in one decoder (E7A) but not the second one.  I was able to turn off the coupling sound in the A decoder but not in the B decoder.  I can live with that too.  I bought both decoders (1730) at the same time.

When I turn on and off the interior lighting using F4 on the TL1 in the baggage car the B decoder has a puny coupling sound, the A decoder is silent.

Yeah, have to see if they have function remapping. Don't think MRC decoders do though. If a short address is ok, you could use a CV19 consist, then CV21 and 22 control what finctions are active on each loco. On my set, only the one loco has sound, so I didn;t have to worry about that. I just configured the headlight on the front unit to be on in forward, off in reverse, the headlight of the rear unit (the front of it faces the train, so at the end of the run, there's nothing to turn, like the real thing, the crew can just set the brake MU settings and walk to the other end of the consist and drive off) on in reverse, off in forward, and the rear light on both end units plus both headlights of the middle unit to just never be on.

Autonerd

It'll work, the only problem is that you'll get horns, bells and lights in all units at the same time.

I agree!  I can’t totally turn off the bell and horn in the B unit.  I’m going to call MRC Technical Support tomorrow morning for programming help.

I have everything else working great.  The TL1 decoder function F4 turns on and off the passenger lighting using the E7A address.  I don’t have to set up a consist in my controller any more.

It'll work, the only problem is that you'll get horns, bells and lights in all units at the same time.

We do this with some consists at our club and I don't like it much -- it gets very frustrating for the yard guy (me) trying to program a consist and not knowing whether a unit has its own number or shares one with others.

I have been running my consist for years like that. I have two consists that have 5 engines each. It runs just fine. I did do a lot of speed matching though. And I don't split the consist. Like 3 engines in the front and 2 in the middle of the train. The split consist doesn't do well on grades as it bunches and stretches the train causing derailments.

My engines are rather simple, EMD F units. I changed CV29 on one of the 'A' units to make the normal forward direction the reverse of the other 'A' unit. That way one of the 'A' units can bring up the rear facing the opposite direction of the lead 'A' unit. That also makes the headlights work correctly in both 'A' units.

Thanks Randy

Everything works the way I wanted it to so I’m going to go with it.

No, they even have a name for it - Basic Consisting. My 3 locos I always run together at the club are set this way. You just have to watch what functions you assign things, if the lights in the baggage car are controlled by F0, then the loco headlight will go on and off when you turn off the baggage car lights.

DCC operations question
Posted by RR_Mel on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 7:01 AM

I think I used the wrong logon, I think I should be using Weirdo_MEL.

I would like to know if there could be a problem if I programmed an E7A, E7B and a baggage car using a function only decoder with the same DCC address.

I have two Athearn SD40-2 frames (A Line/Arrow Hobby) leaded with Mashima motors and Cary E7 bodies.  Both have MRC 1730 decoders, the baggage car has a Digitrax TL1 decoder (F4).

I have always run the locomotives in consist mode from my Prodigy control unit.  I added the TL1 to the consist but I’d rather just use the same address and not have to set up the controller.

I spent several hours dinking around and everything works on one address.  I was wondering if doing so would have any problems.
