slowSSer,
I just read your prior response before my last post. Glad that mystery is now solved.
FWIW, ESU or TCS would be the best choice for either motor-only & sound decoders. Both offer excellent motor-control.

slowSSerthe sound is indeed a buzzing sound, but you can hear it make different noises when the Cab is "talking" with it. how would i be able to find out if it's "sound equipped" or just DCC? and wouldnt I be able to make it run with the NCE Power Cab w/o sound either way?
Did you purchase the locomotive yourself? Do you still have the original box?
The buzzing sound is reminiscent of a DC locomotive operating on a a DCC layout. The best way to confirm that is it remove the screws from the tender cover and look inside. If it did come with a decoder then it's a sound decoder. If you see an empty 8-pin NMRA socket then you need to add a decoder.
I think i screwed up. im looking on Bachman's website and #136, which i have, says nothing about DCC. however, #138, does state that it's DCC.
****. I guess it's "find a decoder" time. Thanks for all of the help, everyone. Its frustrating not having the right information online when you purchase something like this.
BigDaddy Did you power your system off and on after the reset? You could do a short youtube video with your phone of the noises and then post it here. I guess we also have to ask, is this a DCC functioning layout where other DCC engines run, or it this a first time layout test.

I have indeed had other DCC/sound equipped locos running with this same Cab- I had a walthers HO diesel that fired up and ran perfectly straight out of the box with all of the bells and whistles (literally)

A couple of more questions...
If "DCC-ready" then it doesn't have a decoder installed in it. If "Sound-equipped" then it has a Soundtraxx Sound Value decoder installed in it.
The literature states that it is "compatible with conventional DC-powered layouts". I'm assuming that means you don't need to swap a jumper on the decoder board before operating it in either DC or DCC?
its definitely NOT steam boiler sound- it's just a constant noise. I did the reset of the power cab itself. when the cab/controller is sending info to/from the locomotive, there are definitely sounds like what ive heard on the programming videos.
I just tried seeting it as "3" and had no luck.
when done programming, the locomotive lurches forward a little, but the cab does nothing to control it. the headlight is the only thing that is on.
Another thing, the decoder reset option on the PowerCab menu ONLY applies to NCE decoders. Don't use that to reset other brands, it could set unexpected CVs.
ANd if it indeed did reset, then the address is still 3. How are you entering the address? The default address on the decoder is SHORT ADDRESS 3, you need to select that differently with NCE because NCE can use both short and long address 3 and they are NOT the same. Select loco and jut press 3, NOT 03, or 003. Just 3. That will select short address 3.

A few questions for you...
Thanks,
I recently got a bachman 2-6-0 and tried to set it up on my SCE Power Cab. After getting nothing but noise, no movement and the headlaight only on, i went down the reset path for the NCE. While the loco did make all of the same "noises" on reset and re-assigning, it's still just making noise and not responding to any commands. what have i done wrong here?
Thanks.
