It's got to be one of those two. The disconnect mode (which the multiple F6 presses will get out of) works exactly like that - all sounds work, prime mover ramps up, but it never moves. It is what it sounds like - the motor is 'disconnected' (electronically) and gets no power.

It's the original decoder. I can't find the documentation, but it seems like some setting because it never gave any indication of mechanical damage, (noise, rough running) before it just stopped moving. I will try your suggestion and the consist idea too.

Cracked gear locos still move, they just go ca-chunk ca-chunk thumping along.
If this is an older P2K sound loco, it has a QSI decoder in it and you might be in shutdown mode. Double tap F6 to wake it up - hit the F6 button a total of 4 times: on-off-on-off.
It might be in a consist under different address. The consist address would control speed and direction, but the units address would still work for lights and sound.

Or could it be the Proto Cracked Gear Syndrome?
I've had some cases where the gear is split to the point where it completely jams the drive-line.
Carefully hold the locomotive upside-down and try to "turn" each wheel using your thumb or forefinger. If the wheel can be turned by hand the axle gear is split and you will have to replace them.
Not a difficult job plus it gives you a chance to re-lubricate the gears and bearings in the truck.
Google "Life-like split gears" and you will find plenty of information.

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
I have a Walthers Proto 2000 GP7 that was a great runner but now it doesnt move but the sound works, including throttle up and down engine revs. Any help appreciated, I'm not too proficient with DCC programming. Using NCE DCC system for the layout.
