Moe,
I built mine in 2008 and I don't remember the specs on the Ion generator I used in terms of power output. I would have to take my device apart to tell you that (not possible).
I followed the Z train site "grassinator" plans still out there (google them) and bought my Ion generator from Electronic goldmine., The original part numbers have changed from the ones quoted in my plans....I would think that the more power, the merrier. MRH did a very in depth article from the early days that may have more specs on the strength of the generator.
The rule of thumb is that the grass wants to aggressively stand up when applied - you should be able to make it move back and forth by moving the grass gun 3" in the air over the top of the grass....The static charge should be very obvious...My gun can make the grass go everywhere it creates such a strong charge...
If that isn't happening then the gun is defective, you aren't close enough to the surface, there is a bad connection with the ground wire and the glue, the gun's batteries are weak (I don't prefer battery powered guns - they eat batteries quickly) or you have a very weak ION source....

Hi Guy,
Do you know the size og your NIG in KV? The really inexpensive ones do not have enough of a punch. I found this 20kV in ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-12V-to-20000V-High-Voltage-Electrostatic-Generator-Negative-Ion-Generator-/201765577659?epid=627473267&hash=item2efa2a63bb:g:d~kAAOSwUKxYZSNL

They are NIG's for sale on Ebay from 2 to 30 bucks, they all look to be about the same. You can google up some older articles on how to build these devices into a static grass applicator.
Also found this company in one of those articles http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/products.asp?dept=1488

jwar41Its for a static grass applicator, Im not satisfied with the fly swatter type. Will have more KV and work better. Thanks for your reply
Yep - I built a static grass applicator from a negative Ion generator similar to the one mentioned here. It is very powerful (It will zap spiders at 30 FT!!!). Well worth the time and effort.....
Try asking on the MRH site to see where this is at now. Ithink Joe bought a bunch of the Neg ion generators to sell to people who want to build a grass gun - don't know what became of all that....
jjdamnitPlease excuse my ignorance but what does this device do?
The marketable purpose is to purify the air but Joe Fugate was trying their product (which seems to be NLA) for static grass back in 2009. I'm not sure the advantage over the Harbor Freight Fly Swatter
