Plenty of current detectors work fine on DC. The original Twin-T from way back when and any of the related designs up to the advent of DCC, in fact. The Chubb Optimized Detector from the C/MRI series (and you can still get them) is an improved Twin-T design that works with DC.

I guess I could have worded that better, possibly those that use a coil to sense current flow (a kind of transformer), need AC to work.   Diode drop detectors will work with DC just fine.

Modeltrainstuff.com has a sale on these.  Why would I want 5.6K resistors in my wheels?

Current detection for block occupancy.  It is used for either signaling or for hidden track (helix, staging, etc) occupancy.  Most current detectors work with DCC only.
