Java Platform SE binary stopped working
Posted by bandmjim on Sunday, February 12, 2017 9:28 AM

New Laptop running Win10, 64bit, keep getting Java stopped working error.  Using Decoder Pro, PR3, no problem running on desk top with Win10 or Win7 just this new laptop.  If re boot runs ok sometimes on first try then same error after that, any one else having this problem. Ideas or fixes,  Thanks.  I have no luck getting around on the Yahoo groups.

Yes, both freshly loaded as it is a brand new computer.

You have downloaded and installed the current Java?  Not what was included with the new computer - Right?

What interface and DCC system do you have?

That's usually caused by JMRI/Java not being able to communicate with the PR3, probably due to one of three causes:

First, make sure that you have installed the Digitrax drivers for the PR3 exactly as shown in the instructions available from the Digitrax web site for your operating system.  If you let Windows install it's own drivers, the PR3 will NOT work!

Secondly, make sure that you have the correct Com port for the PR3 set in your JMRI preferences.  The Digitrax instructions listed above include information on where that COM port number is found during the driver installation process.

And as a corollary to correctly finding the COM port number and specifying it in your JMRI preferences, remember to ALWAYS plug your PR3 into the same USB port you had it plugged into when you installed the Digitrax drivers.  Otherwise Windows will thing it's a "new" device and assign a new COM port, as well as possibly installing it's own drivers instead of the Digitrax driver.

Finally, be sure you've installed the PR3 firmware update (also found on the Digitrax Web site) if applicable.  It supposedly is only needed if you're using a 64-bit operating system, but I have heard of cases where it helps even on 32-bit systems.  And, mine worked fine without it on 64-bit OS's.  But either way, it can't hurt anything and may fix/prevent an issue.

Great, thanks, I have got to the point where I believe it is the connection problem, i did follow the Digitrax install steps but find that it still does not always find the COM port and the drivers do not seem to load.  I will uninstall everything and follow the install steps again to see if problem still exists.  I also have tried a number of cables, to see if that might have been the problem, again thanks to all, may not get a chance to try again today, but will update when and if I find the problem.  Thanks again, Jim

You can validate the PR3 install by trying to run the Digitrax Soundloader software. If you can communicate with the PR3 in Soundloader, then the same port settings ought to work in JMRI, and you've at least proven the PR3 and any drivers are installed correctly. If Soundloader can't see the PR3, then there's no chance JMRI will either.
