You'll be fine with the smaller wire. The distances are still short, and the current is low, plus any effect on the audio respone the smaller wire would have are well masked by the limited range of the speaker.

Currently doing a TCS Wow sound decoder install, this project in particular I am putting the decoder and a speaker in the HO F7 dummy B unit along another speaker in the powered A unit. When finished this draw barred unit will have 8 wheel pick up.
Anyway, I have been using 30 ga wire for the LED lights, motor wires, track pick up, and speaker. These wires then run back to the B unit where I will tie into the decoder harness. The wires between the units will look like MU cables.
This amount of wires start to take up a fair bit of space and I am wondering if I can use a smaller wire. I have some wire which is the same size as the wires for the decoder harness but I think it may be too small once I run a good length of it between the units. My concern was whether too small of a wire would affect sound quality or performance in any way. Any guidance would be appreciated. I am not near my project as i type this but i will report back with the wire size i thought was too small.
